Ginosa - Laterza - Matera - Bari

After spending the night in nearby Ginosa Marina, we made our way back to the town of Ginosa for our morning rendezvous with the runners who had accompanied us last night.

Dopo aver passato la notte nelle vicinanze di Ginosa Marina, abbiamo ripreso la strada per la città di Ginosa per il nostro appuntamento mattutino con i runners che ci avevano accompagnato la notte precedente.

Many photos were taken with every possible combination of Harmony Runners, Ginosa runners, and their families, in the bright early sunlight. At around 9am we all set off to run 7km to the town of Laterza.

Molte foto sono state scattate con tutte le possibili combinazioni di Harmony runners, Ginosa runners, e i loro familiari, nella chiara luce del sole del primo mattino. Alle 9 circa siamo partiti tutti per correre 7 km verso la città di Laterza.

The runners from Ginosa were all fairly quick and we sometimes had to slow the front runner down; the torch often makes people run that much faster! Just outside Laterza we met more local runners who were very happy to be running with their friends from Ginosa and the torch. After making a quick tour of the town, we continued on our way to Matera, another 20km away.

I runners di Ginosa erano tutti abbastanza veloci e qualche volta dovevamo far rallentare i runners che erano davanti; la torcia spesso fa correre le persone così veloci! Appena fuori Laterza abbiamo incontrato più runners locali che erano veramente felici di star correndo con i loro amici di Ginosa e con la torcia. Dopo aver fatto un veloce giro della città, abbiamo continuato la nostra strada per Matera, altri 20 km.

In Matera we met the police and together with all the runners from Ginosa and Laterza, we made a large group. This looked impressive as we ran into the local school and the children screamed with excitement as we ran into their playground. A representative of the town was also there to receive the torch. It was the last day of term for them and there was a party atmosphere all around us. Some of the children had made pizza, which they offered us - it was delicious! There were also sweet biscuits and drinks laid out for the kids, but we were entreated to help ourselves too.

A Matera abbiamo incontrato la polizia e insieme con tutti i runners di Ginosa e Laterza, abbiamo creato un ampio gruppo. Come è stato impressionante tanto il correre nella scuola locale con i bambini che gridavano eccitati quanto correre nel loro cortile. Un rappresentante della città era anche là per ricevere la torcia. Era l'ultimo giorno del trimestre per loro e c'era un atmosfera di festa tutto intorno a noi. Alcuni bambini avevano preparato della pizza che ci hanno offerto - era deliziosa! C'erano anche biscotti dolci e bibite messe fuori per i ragazzi, ma eravamo ancora presi dall'aiutare noi stessi.

Inside one classroom the children sang a song for us accompanied by their teacher on the guitar. We played the game in which they have to guess where each of the team comes from and generated a frantic and jubilant screaming match in the process! The room had a large wall map of Europe, which we used to point out the location of our countries and also the route of the World Harmony Run.

In una classe i bambini hanno cantato una canzone per noi accompagnata dal loro insegnante con la chitarra. Abbiamo fatto un gioco in cui loro dovevano indovinare da dove venisse ciascun componente del team generando un' agitata e giubilante partita con schiamazzi durante la gara! La stanza aveva una grande mappa dell'Europa a muro, che abbiamo usato per indicare la posizione delle nostre nazioni ed anche la strada della World Harmony Run.

We left the friendly runners from Ginosa and Laterza here and continued on, past row upon row of olive and fruit trees, to the coastal town of Bari. The sea breeze was strong, and made the air feel cool as we ran against the wind to the port. Near Bari we met more runners who accompanied us for the final 5km of the Italian leg of the Run.

Abbiamo lasciato i runners di Ginosa e Laterza amichevolmente qui ed abbiamo continuato, attraverso le file di alberi di frutta e ulivi, verso la città costiera di Bari. La brezza marina era forte, e faceva percepire l'aria fredda mentre correvamo contro il vento verso il porto. Vicino Bari abbiamo incontrato più runners che ci hanno accompagnato per i 5 km finali dello stivale italiano della Run.

From the high mountains in the north, to the volcanic landscape of the south, Italy had been a vibrant and enjoyable stretch of running. The Italian people with whom we spent time had been unequivocally cheerful, friendly, and welcoming! Once at the ferry port we had photos taken with the staff of the Superfast Ferry Company , who had very kindly agreed to sponsor 50% of our trip to Greece, and as the sun went down we set off, into the Adriatic Sea.

Dalle alte montagne nel nord al paesaggio vulcanico del sud, l'Italia è stata un vibrante e piacevole allungo di corsa. Gli italiani con cui abbiamo passato il tempo sono stati inequivocabilmente felici, amichevoli e accoglienti! Una volta arrivati al porto del traghetto abbiamo scattato delle foto con lo staff del Superfast Ferry Company, che ha molto gentilmente concordato di sponsorizzare il 50% del nostro viaggio in Grecia, e mentre il sole tramontava siamo partiti, nel mare Adriatico.
