Roma - Anzio - Terracina

Overnight in Roma we had been provided with very comfortable accommodation and excellent food by the manager of a hotel. He was also a runner, so in the morning he accompanied us to our first school in Roma with the torch.

Per tutta la notte a Roma il manager dell'hotel si è preso cura di noi con una sistemazione veramente confortevole e dell'eccelente cibo. Era anche un corridore, così la mattina ci ha accompagnato alla prima scuola a Roma con la torcia.

There we met children of mixed ages, from 7 to 15 years. They sang the Italian national anthem for us with great enthusiasm. As always, we also sang the Harmony Run song for them. When we are with children we usually tell them that if they do not like our singing, they should put their fingers in their ears. Today one little girl actually did it! This made us laugh and probably diminished the quality of our singing still further!

Là ci siamo incontrati con bambini di diverse età, dai 7 ai 15 anni. Hanno cantato il canto nazionale italiano per noi con grande entusiasmo. Come sempre, anche noi abbiamo cantato il canto dell'Harmony Run per loro. Quando siamo con i bambini usualmente diciamo loro che se non piace loro il nostro modo di cantare, possono mettersi le dita nelle orecchie. Oggi una ragazzina lo ha effettivamente fatto! Questo ci ha fatto ridere e probabilmente ha diminuito la qualità del nostro canto ancora di più!

We made our way into the centre of the city where we had an appointment with the MP in charge of sport for Roma. The traffic was very heavy but this gave us the chance to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and monumental architecture of the city for a little longer. At the Campidoglio we met MP Gianni Rivera, a former member of the Italian football team and captain of AC Milan.

Abbiamo fatto il nostro percorso nel centro della città dove avevamo un appuntamento con il MP in carica dello sport di Roma. Il traffico era davvero pesante ma questo ci ha dato l'opportunità di gioire la vibrante atmosfera e la moumentale aechitettura della città un poco più a lungo. Al Campidoglio ci siamo incontrati con MP Gianni Rivera, il primo membro del team di football italiano e capitano dell'AC Milan.

He presented us with a beautiful statuette of the legend of Romulus and Remus. Leaving behind the city of Roma, we ran on to Castel Gandolfo, where the Pope has his summer residence. Accompanied by the police we made our way up the hill to the town, where we were met by the Mayor. He showed us the torch that had been used to light the Olympic flame at the Rome Olympics of 1960, which stands in the hallway of their Municipal building. There we also had drinks and were even given a sandwich each, to take with us for later.

Ci ha presentato con una bellissima statuetta della leggenda di Romolo e Remo. Lasciandoci dietro la città di Roma, abbiamo corso fino a Castel Gandolfo, dove il Papa ha la sua residenza estiva. Accompagnati dalla polizia abbiamo fatto il nostro percorso sulle colline fino in paese, dove ci siamo incontrati con il sindaco. Egli ci ha mostrato la torcia che è stata usata per illuminare la fiamma Olimpica alle Olimpiadi di Roma del 1960, che sta nella hall della costruzione municipale. Là abbiamo anche bevuto e ci è stato dato un panino a testa, da portare con noi per dopo.

We ran on, along the straight road to Anzio, where we were greeted by at least 150 children in the town square. Some of them had made their own torches out of tissue paper and plastic bottles and almost all of them wore yellow caps.

Abbiamo corso, lungo la strada dritta fino ad Anzio, dove siamo stati accolti dal almeno 150 bambini nella piazza della città. Alcuni di loro hanno costruito le loro proprie torcie esternamente di carta velina e di bottiglie di plastica e quasi tutti loro indossavano cappelli gialli.

They cheered us like heroes as we entered the town! They were full of joy and energy and were very vocal! We stayed with them a long time and watched some of the older children perform with large flags, which they would throw into the air and catch again. All of the children seemed to be having so much fun.

Ci hanno applaudito come eroi quando siamo entrati nella città! Erano pieni di gioia ed energia e erano pieni di voce! Siamo stati con loro a lungo ed abbiamo guardato qualcuno dei bambini più grandi performare con larghe bandiere, che lanciavano nell'aria e prendevano ancora. Tutti i bambini sembravano si stessero veramente divertendo.

We did not leave until 4 o’clock and we still had 70km to run to Terracina! Our route took us along the coast, which gave us a cooling sea breeze for most of the way. We were running for some time towards Monte Circeo, which sits right at the edge of the sea. From a distance, with its base shrouded in mist, it looked like an island. The road continued through the trees at the foot of the mountain and soon we arrived in Terracina. There we met the representative of the Municipio who was providing us with dinner and accommodation for the night. The food was delicious and we enjoyed it on the terrace of the hotel, overlooking the sea.

Non siamo partiti fino alle 4 e ancora abbiamo corso 70km fino a Terracina! la nostra strada ci ha portati lungo la costa, che ci ha donato una fresca brezza marina per la maggior parte del percorso. Abbiamo corso per un po' verso Monte Circeo, che si trova giusto a filo del mare. Da una certa distanza sembrava simile ad un'isola. La strada è continuata attraverso gli alberi ai piedi della montagna e presto siamo arrivati in Terracina. Là ci siamo incontrati con il rappresentante del Municipio che ci ha procurato la cena ed una sistemazione per la notte. Il cibo era delizioso e ce lo siamo gustato sul terrazzo dell'hotel, che dava sul mare.
