Enna - Leonforte - Regalbuto - Catania

Today dawned clear and sunny. There was a fresh breeze after yesterday’s downpour had cleared the air. Following breakfast we headed up the hill to the highest part of the town, where the sports stadium stands. It was built in the 60’s and so was full of character; poppies grew beside the track, which had long since lost its markings. Today it was to host a large sports festival for 500 local children. They all lined up outside, carrying flags and banners to show which school they were from.

Oggi l'alba è stata chiara e soleggiata. c'era una fresca brezza dopo l'acquazzone di ieri che ha rischiarato l'aria. Dopo la colazione ci siamo diretti in collina verso la parte più alta della città, dove si trova lo stadio dello sport. E' stato costruito negli anni '60 e così era pieno di personaggi;botti erano prodotti intorno alla pista, che da molto tempo aveva perso i suoi segni. Oggi e' stato ospite un imponente festival di 500 bambini del posto. Tutti allineati esternamente, portavano bandiere e striscioni per mostrare da quale scuola provenissero.

Many were dressed in brightly coloured t-shirts and caps. They all paraded into the stadium to the sound of marching music played over the loudspeakers. We did a lap of honour around the track whilst the organiser of the event introduced the World Harmony Run over the sound system. As there were so many children just one child from each school came to the front to run with the torch. We gave a striking (better not to be remembered) performance of the World Harmony Run song, and then left to start our run to Catania, a distance of 90km.

Molti erano vestiti con t-shirts e cappelli brillantemente colorati. Tutti loro hanno sfilato nello stadio al suono della musica da marcia suonata dagli altoparlanti. Abbiamo fatto un giro di onore intorno alla pista mentre gli organizzatori dell'evento introducevano la World Harmony Run attraverso l'impianto acustico. C'erano così tanti bambini che solo uno da ogni scuola è venuto avanti per correre con la torcia. Abbiamo dato una performance del canto della World Harmony Run sconcertante (meglio non essere ricordarta) e quindi siamo partiti per iniziare la nostra corsa verso Catania, una distanza di 90 km.

The road from Enna to the next town of Leonforte was winding and steep in places, with views over the Sicilian hills on both sides. At the entrance to Leonforte the police were waiting to escort us into the old town, which seems to grow from the rocks it stands upon. There, around 40 schoolchildren were waiting by the side of the road for us.

La strada da Enna alla città successiva di Leonforte era ventosa e ripida in parte, con vedute sulle colline siciliane su entrambi i lati. All'entrata di Leonforte la polizia stava aspettando di scortarci nella vecchia città, che sembrava crescere dalle rocce su cui stava. Là, circa 40 scolari ci stavano aspettando sul lato della strada.

We had only a short time to spend with them but they were bursting with joy and excitement to run with us a little way up the street with the torch. We said ‘ciao’ and continued on our way, still in the hills, past a lake that gleamed in the sunlight many metres below us. Local runners and children from the athletic team met us just outside the town of Regalbuto.

Avevamo solo poco tempo da spendere con loro ma scoppiavano di gioia ed eccitazione al correre con noi un poco di strada con la torcia.Gli abbiamo detto 'ciao' ed abbiamo continuato sulla nostra strada, ancora nelle colline, passato un lago che luccicava nella luce del sole molti metri sotto di noi. Ci siamo inocontrati con i runners del posto e i bambini del team di atletica giusto fuori la città di Regalbuto.

As we ran into the town square the President of the team announced our arrival over a microphone and there were lots of people waiting for us. Some children had made a large banner and there was much applause as we introduced ourselves and said which country we were from! We were then provided with some lunch by the townspeople.

Mentre correvamo nella piazza della città il presidente del team annunciava il nostro arrivo attraverso il microfono e c'erano molte persone che ci stavano aspettando. Alcuni bambini hanno fatto una grande bandiera e ci sono stati molti applausi quando abbiamo introdotto noi stessi e detto da quale nazione venivamo! Ci è stato quindi fornito il pasto dalla gente della città.

This began with a piece of Sicilian pizza and continued with a giant bowl of fruit, melon, sweet pastries, an iced cake, and then ice cream to finish! We were quite speechless at the quantities of food that kept appearing in front of us. Needless to say, we enjoyed it immensely and left the town wondering how we would manage to run the final 50km to Catania! Despite the afternoon heat we reached Catania where we met the city representative of sports and finished the day with a run through the main street of Catania.

Questo è iniziato con un pezzo di pizza siciliana e continuato con una gigante ciotola di frutta, melone, paste dolci, una torta con gelato ed ancora un gelato per finire! Eravamo abbastanza senza parole per le quantità di cibo che stavano apparendo di fronte a noi. Inutile dire, abbiamo gioito di ciò immensamente e lasciato la città meravigliandoci di come potessimo dirigere la corsa dei 50 km finali verso Catania!A dispetto della mangiata del pomeriggio abbiamo raggiunto Catania dove abbiamo incontrato i rappresentanti dello sport della città e concluso il giorno con una corsa attraverso la principale strada di Catania.

Later during the evening we went to the harbour where we took the speedboat to Malta.

Più tardi durante la notte siamo andati all'asilo dove abbiamo preso il motoscafo veloce verso Malta.
