Gubbio - Assisi - Spoleto - Terni

Today was a busy day. A busy day is always a bit of a chaotic day and today was no exception. We had a total of eight meetings planned for the day – the record in Italy so far. This calls for the highest alertness to keep to the time schedule and not to make any mistakes – a sheer impossible task, needless to say.

We had spent the night in Gubbio in a somewhat abandoned gym hall not particularly renowned for comfort, but on the World Harmony Run one cannot afford to be picky. So when morning dawned we packed up and headed out to our first meeting of the day in a high school in Gubbio.

Oggi è stato un giorno impegnativo. Una giornata impegnativa è sempre in parte un giorno caotico e oggi non è stata un'eccezione. avevamo un totale di 8 incontri pianificati per il giorno - il record in italia fino ad ora. Questo richiede la massima vigilanza per manenere l'orario e non fare errori- un puro impossibile compito, inutile dirlo.

Abbiamo passato la notte a Gubbio nella hall di una qualche palestra abbandonata non particolarmente rinomata per il comfort, ma nella World Harmony Run uno non può permettersi di essere selettivo. Così quando la mattina ha albeggiato abbiamo fatto i bagagli e ci siamo diretti verso il nostro primo incontro del giorno in un'alta scuola a Gubbio.

A class of 15- and 16 year-olds were awaiting us and shared our inspiration and joy in holding and running with the torch. We were mighty pleased with their goodwill and enthusiasm.

Una classe di quindicenni e sedicenni ci stava aspettando ed ha condiviso con noi l'ispirazione e la gioia di tenere e correre con la torcia. Eravamo enormemente appagati dalla loro buona volontà ed entusiasmo.

Then we had to move on quickly to cover 32 hilly kilometers to Valfabbrica, where an elementary school had prepared a wonderful reception for us. The children were waving little flags from various countries as they sang us a nice song accompanied by children playing on wooden flutes.

Qundi ci dovevamo muovere velocemente per coprire i 32 chilometri collinari verso Valfabbrica, dove una scuola elementare aveva preparato una bellissima accoglienza per noi. I bambini stavano sventolando delle piccole bandiere di varie nazioni mentre cantavano un simpatico canto accompagnati da altri che suonavano flauti di legno.

We had put out one of our runners just before the meeting in Valfabbrica to cover the 13km to Assisi – world-renowned because of its patron saint Francesco of Assisi – but the runner unfortunately took a wrong turn and had to be collected by our van. We had no other option than to drive the remaining distance to Assisi to be in time for the meeting and promised to run the missed kilometers later on.

The steep three-kilometer ascent into Assisi was a run to remember, not in the least because of the beautiful vistas of the valleys below. We ran towards a square in the bristling little town to greet a group of young ‘bambini’ (kids) most of them dressed in blue and pink school uniforms, wearing yellow caps.

Avevamo fatto uscire uno dei nostri runners giusto prima l'incontro in Valfabbrica per coprire i 13 km verso Assisi - nome rinomato perchè il suo patrono è san Francesco d'Assisi - ma il runner sfortunatamente aveva preso una curva sbagliata e ha dovuto essere raccolto dal nostro furgone. Non avevamo altra possibilità che guidare la distanza rimanente verso Assisi per essere in tempo per l'incontro e promettere di correre i chilometri persi più tardi.

I tre ripidi chilometri di salita in Assisi sono stati una corsa da ricordare, non in ultimo per la bellissima vista sulla vallata sotto. Abbiamo corso verso una piazza nell'ispido piccolo paese per salutare un gruppo di giovani bambini la maggior parte dei quali vestiti in uniformi scolastiche blu e rosa, con indosso cappelli gialli.

The meeting was short but sweet and we waved goodbye after the traditional torch run to set out towards the town of Spello, some 11km away.

L'incontro è stato breve ma dolce e abbiamo salutato con la mano dopo la tradizionale corsa con la torcia per muoverci verso il paese di Spello, lontano 11 km.

But as we ran down the streets of Assisi we discovered that one of our runners wasn’t with us. She had somehow gotten lost in Assisi and was nowhere to be found. One of the vans stayed behind to look for her as the others proceeded to Spello.

Ma mentre correvamo giù per le strade di Assisi abbiamo scoperto che una dei nostri runners non era con noi. Si era persa in qualche modo in Assisi e non era stata trovata in nessun luogo. Uno dei furgoni è rimasto indietro per cercarla mentre gli altri hanno proseguito verso Spello.

In Spello we were climbing steep streets once more to meet with school children and the Mayor at a small, picturesque town square. The Mayor offered his goodwill, and the children ran with us around the square.

A Spello siamo saliti per ripide strade una volta di più per incontrarci con gli scolari e il sindaco in una piccola, pittoresca piazza del paese. Il sindaco ha offerto la sua buona volontà e i bambini hanno corso con noi intorno alla piazza.

We thanked them by singing the World Harmony Run song and sent our Austrian runner, Pratul, down again to cover the 5km to our next meeting in Foligno. Still there was no sign of our lost Hungarian runner and the other van had joined us again after informing the local police in Assisi. We had to go on.

In Foligno a very kind Mayor welcomed us on a beautiful sun-bathed square. He was like a sweet and compassionate grandfather as he beamed at us with affectionate smiles.

Li abbiamo ringraziati cantando il canto della World Harmony Run e spedendo il nostro runner austriaco, Pratul, giù ancora per coprire i 5 km fino al nostro prossimo incontro a Foligno. Ancora là non c'era segno della nostra persa runner ungherese e l'altro furgone si era unito a noi di nuovo dopo aver informato la polizia locale in Assisi. Dovevamo continuare.

After the short run with the torch – our little ritual to make people a part of our team and dream – he offered us pineapple juice and fresh olives and toast on the terrace of the adjacent café. At that moment we were relieved to get a call from our local coordinator in Torino that the Assisi police had found our runner. One of the vans drove back to collect her as the rest of us ran on towards Spoleto, a medium sized town in the region of Umbria.

In Spoleto we were greeted by the Mayor and the local press another Italian ‘piazza’ or town square.

Dopo una breve corsa con la torcia - il nostro piccolo rituale di rendere persone parte del nostro team and dream - ci ha offerto succo d'ananas, olive fresche e toast sulla terrazza del caffè adiacente. In quel momento siamo stati alleviati dal ricevere una chiamata dal nostro coordinatore locale in Torino che diceva che la polizia di Assisi aveva trovato la nostra runner. Uno dei furgoni è tornato indietro per raccoglierla mentre il resto di noi ha corso verso Spoleto, un paese di medie dimensioni nella regione dell'Umbria.

A Spoleto siamo stati accolti dal sindaco e dalla stampa in un'altra piazza italiana.

According to the program we were supposed to get a ‘refreshment,’ but the Spoletian definition of a refreshment exceeded our wildest imaginations. An enormous tray of spaghetti, enough to feed our whole team for a week, was carried outside from an adjacent restaurant, followed by a delicious fruit salad, roasted zucchini and aubergine, fried cauliflowers and asparagus and topped off by ‘gelato’ or Italian ice-cream! Some days back a school kid gave us the funny reply that the reason we run is ‘to lose weight,’ but in Italy this goal proves to be a far cry. We were immensely grateful for the Mayor’s true hospitality and fervently hoped our stomachs would allow us to finish the remaining kilometers of the day.

Secondo il programma avevamo supposto di ricevere un "rinfresco", ma la definizione spoletiana di rinfresco eccedeva la nostra più vaga immaginazione. Un enorme vassoio di spaghetti, sufficiente a nutrire il nostro intero team per una settimana, era stato portato all'esterno da un ristorante adiacente , seguito da una deliziosa insalata di frutta, zucchine e melanzane arrostite, cavolfiori ed asparagi fritti e ricoperto da gelato italiano! Qualche giorno prima una scuola di ragazzi ci aveva dato la divertente risposta che la ragione per cui noi corriamo è per "perdere peso", ma in Italia questa meta si dimostra essere un lontano anelito. Siamo stati immensamente grati per l'accurata ospitalità del Sindaco sperando ferventemente che i nostri stomaci ci permettessero di finire i rimanenti chilometri del giorno.

Our seventh meeting was scheduled at a famous site: the ‘Cascata della marmore’ or marble waterfalls, a huge man-made waterfall outside the city of Terni, our destination of the day. Some of us found refreshment in a small lake at the foot of a waterfall and cooled our bodies in the ice-cold water. We screamed for joy. Then we met with a group of local runners from Terni who accompanied us for the final seven kilometers into their city.

Il nostro settimo incontro era stato programmato in un famoso luogo: la "Cascata delle Marmore" , un enorme uomo fatto cascata fuori dalla città di Terni, la nostra destinazione del giorno. Alcuni di noi hanno trovato ristoro in un piccolo lago ai piedi di una cascata e rinfrescato i nostri corpi nell'acqua ghiacciata. Urlavamo per la gioia. Quindi ci siamo incontrati con un gruppo di runners locali di Terni che ci hanno accompagnato per i 7 chilometri finali nella loro città.

In Terni we had our final meeting of the day, and a grand finale it was! The gentlemen from the folkloristic group ‘La Rekkia’ had prepared a real warm welcome on the main square of the city. After presenting ourselves and shaking hands with the city’s representative of education, we joined La Rekkia in a small circular parade, clapping our hands with their cheerful music and laughing at their ingenious, funny instruments. They marched with us to the gates of the city hall, where our run of the day ended.

A Terni c' è stato il nostro incontro finale della giornata, ed è stato un gran finale! Il gentiluomo del gruppo folcloristico "La Rekkia" ci ha preparato un davvero caloroso benvenuto sulla piazza principale della città. Dopo aver presentato noi stessi e aver dato la mano ai rappresentanti dell'educazione della città, ci siamo uniti a La Rekkia in una piccola parata in circolo, battendo le mani con la loro divertente musica e ridendo dei loro ingegnosi e simpatici strumenti. Hanno marciato con noi fino alle porte della città, dove la nostra corsa del giorno è terminata.

That evening we were invited to yet another sumptuous meal by the vice-president of the national running foundation “FIASP,” whose support of our Run was heart-warming. He had organized all the events in Terni and also provided us with sleeping places for the night in a very nice hostel. We owe him an enormous amount of gratitude.

Well-fed, well-exercised and well-experienced we rolled into bed that night to enjoy a sound and well-deserved sleep. What a day!

La sera siamo stati invitati ancora ad un altro sontuoso pasto dal vice-presidente della fondazione nazionale di corsa "FIASP", il cui supporto per la nostra WHR è stato commovente. Ha organizzato tutti gli eventi in Terni ed anche ci ha procurato posti per dormire per la notte in un ostello veramente carino. Gli siamo debitori di un'infinita gratitudine.

Ben nutriti, ben allenati e con la sensazione di una bella esperienza siamo rotolati nel letto per gioire di un profondo e ben meritato sonno. Che giornata!
