Catanzaro - Cosenza - Castrovillari

Our day began with around 100 noisy, excited children at the same school as yesterday evening. We had somehow acquired celebrity status amongst them, and spent more time signing autographs, on pieces of paper, tissues, arms and t-shirts! Many photos were taken, although some of us did not yet feel entirely awake, then we ran with the children through their playground as they whooped with joy.

Il nostro giorno è iniziato con circa 100 rumorosi ed eccitati bambini della stessa scuola di ieri sera. Avevamo in qualche modo acquisito uno status di celebrità fra loro, ed abbiamo speso più tempo firmando autografi, su pezzi di carta, tessuti, braccia e t-shirts! Sono state scattate diverse foto, sebbene qualcuno di noi non si sentisse ancora completamente sveglio, comunque abbiamo corso con i bambini nel loro cortile mentre ci circondavano con gioia.

We left with some of the teachers to go to the Municipio where we were given blue Unicef caps to wear. After more photos, we entered the conference room where there were several officials and some older children. We presented the World Harmony Run in English and Italian before leaving to begin our days running. The teachers bade us affectionate farewells as we departed for the coast, where we had been running the day before.

Siamo partiti per andare con alcuni insegnanti al Municipio dove abbiamo dato cappelli blu dell'Unicef da indossare. Dopo più foto, siamo entrati nella sala conferenze dove c'erano parecchi funzionari e alcuni dei bambini più anziani. Abbiamo presentato la World Harmony Run in inglese ed italiano prima di partire per iniziare il nostro giorno correndo. Gli insegnanti ci hanno augurato di stare bene quando siamo partiti per la costa, dove stavamo correndo il giorno prima.

Our route took us northwards alongside bright, azure sea. After 60km we turned inland again, and wound our way upwards through the mountains. The weather was pleasant for running; the mountaintops were shrouded in mist and a cool breeze took the edge off the climb. Very soon, the sea was far below and trees covered the slopes around us. A series of tunnels brought us to the other side of the mountain and the descent into Cosenza.

La nostra strada ci ha portato verso nord a fianco del chiaro e azzurro mare. Dopo 60 km abbiamo girato ancora verso l'interno, e concluso il nostro cammino verso l'alto attraverso le montagne. Il tempo era piacevole per correre; sulle vette delle montagne stava scendendo la foschia e una brezza fredda si è levata sul filo della salita. Molto presto, il mare era lontano sotto di noi e gli alberi coprivano il pendio intorno a noi. Una serie di tunnel ci hanno portato sull'altro lato della montagna scendendo a Cosenza.

In the town we met runners from the C.O.N.I (Italian Olympic Committee) at the regional HQ of the organisation. There the President of the Committee greeted us. He showed us around the premises, which also housed a museum of sports. The building was a former train station, which had been transformed into a modern centre for sports with all possible amenities.

Nella città abbiamo incontrato i runners, dal C.O.N.I. ( Commissione Olimpica Italiana) al HQ regionale dell'organizzazione. Là il Presidente della Commissione ci ha accolti. Ci ha mostrato gli edifici intorno che ospitavano anche un museo dello sport. La costruzione era la stazione del primo treno, che era stato trasformata in un moderno centro di sports con tutte le possibili comodità.

The run continued northwards alongside the River Crati, now on a flat plain amongst agricultural land. We began climbing again in the hills before the town of Castrovillari. From the road we had spectacular views of the Pollino National Park and surrounding landscape. High mountains loomed on the horizon and sunlight streamed through low clouds as evening approached.

La corsa ha continuato verso nord a fianco della Riviera Crati, ora su una piatta pianura attraverso il terreno agricolo. Abbiamo iniziato a salire ancora sulle colline prima della città di Castrovillari. Dalla strada c'erano viste spettacolari del parco Nazionale del Pollino e del paesaggio intorno. Alte montagne si profilavano all'orizzonte e la luce del sole fluiva attraverso le nuvole basse mentre la sera si avvicinava.

At the entrance to the town a group of children met us to accompany the Run to the Municipio. They were from a local Athletic club and included a number of regional track and field champions.

All'entrata della città un gruppo di bambini si è incontrato con noi per accomagnare la Run al municipio. Venivano da un club di atletica locale e includevano un certo numero di campioni regionali di baseball.

Some were quite young and they all took turns running with the torch into the town centre. At the Municipal buildings the Sindaco (Mayor) met us and we presented him with the torch. On behalf of the town he gave us a huge silver cup and several books about the locality. The press were present with cameras and microphones to record the meeting and there was a very friendly atmosphere. The Sindaco talked about the importance of understanding and harmony on both a local and international scale. He mentioned that real peace is a flame inside all our hearts and not something only external.

Qualcuno era abbastanza giovane e loro tutti facevano giri correndo con la torcia nel centro città. Al municipio ci siamo incontrati con il sindaco e ci siamo presentati a lui con la torcia. Per conto della città ci ha dato un'enorme coppa d'oro e parecchi libri sulla località. La stampa era presente con la videocamera ed i microfoni per registrare l'incontro e c'era veramente un'atmosfera amichevole. Il sindaco ha parlato a riguardo dell'importanza della comprensione e dell'armonia su scala locale ed internazionale. Ha menzionato che la reale pace è una fiamma dentro tutti i nostri cuori e non qualcosa solamente di esterno.

Our accommodation that evening was at the ‘Panoramica’ guest house, run by a very kind German-Italian couple. We had dinner at a nearby Pizzeria with the Coach of the athletic team we had met earlier, and his son. The Calabrians have a natural warmth and an open, amicable nature and we were made to feel very much at home. During our excellent meal we were lucky to be able to speak to a good friend of the coach, Pietro Mennea. He was the Italian world 200m record holder for over 20 years and he greeted each one of us on the phone to wish us all the best for the rest of the Run. We finished the evening at the home of the coach where his wife gave us ice cream and Macedonia, a local fruit salad dish. Tired, happy, and with full stomachs, we returned to our rooms for a good night’s sleep.

La nostra sistemazione quella sera era alla pensione "Panoramica", gestita da una coppia tedesca-italiana veramente gentile. Abbiamo cenato nella Pizzeria vicino con il Coatch del team di altletica, che avevamo incontrato prima, e suo figlio. I calabresi hanno un naturale calore e una natura aperta ed amichevole e ci siamo sentiti veramente come a casa. Durante il nostro eccellente pasto siamo fortunatamente stati in grado di parlare con un buon amico del coach, Pietro Mennea. E' stato il dententore del record dei 200m italiano per oltre 20 anni ed ha salutato ognuno di noi per telefono augurandoci il meglio per il resto della Run. Abbiamo concluso la serata a casa del coach dove sua moglie ci ha dato un gelato e della macedonia, un piatto locale di insalata di frutta. Stanchi, felici e con gli stomaci pieni, siamo tornati alle nostre camere per farci una bella dormita.
