Today's kilometers took us past the largest glacier in Iceland. The Vatnajökull glacier is over 100K wide!

Hlaupaleið dagsins var meðfram stærsta jökli á Ísland og í Evrópu, vatnajökli sem er yfir 100km breiður!

A big thankyou to Kjartan Kjartanson, the principal of the school in Kirkjubæjarklaustri where we stayed the previous evening. It was a great treat to have real beds and sofa cushion upon which to lay our weary bodies. Their commercial kitchen was a joy to prepare dinner in, although I don't suggest adding 5 TBS of cayenne pepper instead of paprika to Hungarian goulash. Oops. (I was tired and that's when it becomes more difficult, and more necessary, to be mindful.)

Low clouds quickly turned into sunny skies for one of the most spectacular days of running I've ever experienced. It was exhilarating for most of us....

Veðrið breyttist snögglega frá rigningu til sólskins á eina stórbrotnasta svæði Íslands. Það var ótrúleg reynsla fyrir okkur flest.

Þegar glitta fór í fyrsta skriðjökulinn. Þá var ekki að furða að maður stoppaði allt að 7 sinnum til að taka myndir.

Florien, frá austuríki nýtur sín einn á vegum úti. Þetta er eini tíminn sem við erum ein og eins gott að njóta þess sem lengst.

From the scenery we encountered today I think that the number of waterfalls in Iceland must be at least equal to the number of people in Iceland. Incredible!

Ótrúlegt útsýni gagntók okkur. Það mætti áætla að fossar landsins séu jafn margir og landsmenn.

The glacier was most impressive. We were all in awe.

Mögnuð fegurð skriðjökulsins.

It was a beautiful day to cruise the Jökulsárlón Lagoon courtesy of this tourist boat.. Our guide shared lots of interesting information about the receding glacier and the resulting lagoon.

Þetta var frábær dagur til að skreppa út á lónið í boði rekstaraðila lónsins. En leiðsögukonan fræddi okkur um minnkandi jökulin og stækkun lónsins.

75-80 years ago the glacier started melting with large chunks of it breaking off, creating iceburgs which take 6-7 years to melt as they slowly make their way to the sea.

Fyrir um 80 árum síðan byrjaði jökulinn að bráðna með þeim afleiðingum að lónið fór að stækka mjög hratt. En jakarnir sem brotna út í lónið frá jöklinum taka um 6-7 ár að meðaltali að bráðna.

The icebergs were generally a crystal white color with a light blue hue and sometimes black stripes or areas. The black is the ash from the recently erupted volcano and the blue is the result of the ice's inability to absorb the color blue on the spectrum. 90% of this berg is under the water!

Jakarnir eru venjulega hvítir að lit með bláum ljóma en stundum hafa þeir í sér svartan lit sem er t.d. frá nýlegu öskugosi í Grímsvötnum eða eldri gosum. 90% að ísjakanum er undir vatni.

Our fearless photographer, Apaguha, rode in a smaller boat to enable him to get the best shots of his team and the scenery.

Hugrakki ljósmyndarinn með meiru Apaguha frá tékklandi sést hér á besta stað til að mynda lónið.

Our guide (in front in black) held that block of ice for the duration of our cruise. She then chipped it up for us to taste this 1000 year old ice. It was delicious.

Leiðsögukonan okkar sem heldur uppi ísnum braut hann niður og gaf okkur að smakka. En ísnum er u.þ.b. 1000 ára.

Pranava led the charge for runners to immerse themselves in the freezing lagoon. I stood on the shore and cheered thinking to myself, "these people are crazy!" What can I say... I'm from Southern California.

Það var auðvitað Íslendingurinn í liðinu sem var fyrstur útí lónið. Sumir stóðu á ströndinni hugsandi. Þetta er brjálað!

Some runners swam out to an iceberg and this feat made onto the Icelandic news. Not even locals do crazy things like this.

Sumir voru harðari en heimamenn og þótti þetta athæfi fréttnæmt.

The female team stepped up to the challenge, smiling the entire time.

Stelpurnar létu ekkert aftra sér að sýna líka hetjudáðir með bros á vör!

They were joined by some young bikers who attended the ceremony and felt the harmony.

Við fengum nokkra krakka með okkur síðasta spölinn á hjólum.

Thanks to Höfn for their warm welcome and the impeccably clean pool and accomodations.

Our newest World Harmony Tree.

Nýja gróðursetta friðartréð á leið um landið.

We planted a tree in Höfn for them to remember our visit. Due to a bridge being flooded out by the volcanic activity, the plaque was flown in and arrived just in the nick of time.

Við plöntuðum friðartréi ásamt Ásgerði forseta bæjarráðs sem minningu um viðkomu okkar. Vegna flóðsins yfir múlakvíslina þá þurfti að fljúgja með plattan frá Reykjavík.

A memorable day was enjoyed by the whole team.

Minnistæður dagur eftir fallega athöfn.
