Iceland 12 July: Akureyri - Lágheiði

The sun shone brightly today, but not quite as brightly as the sunshine in our participants, who were eager, joyful and...many!

The first group of runners came from Youth Sports Club Æskan, and they ran with us out of Akureyri town and all the way up to where the road forks into Route 1 and the road to Dalvík town (where we were headed). The runners of YSC Æskan were: Halldóra Sigríður Halldórsdóttir, Halldór Arinbjarnarson, Ragna Erlingsdóttir, Sigríður Helgadóttir and Davíð.

Joining us from the road to Dalvík were three groups of runners from the local community. The first two groups joined us to Dalvík town.

The third group ran all the way from Dalvík up to the mountain tunnel leading into Ólafsfjörður fjord and village. These runners were undaunted by the steep incline and ran in large numbers, obviously having a lot of fun.

Moreover, this was an exceptionally beautiful day and the untouched Icelandic nature showed it best sides. The participants from the third group of runners from the local community included these people: Rebekka Rún Sævarsdóttir, Súsanna Svansdóttir, Mjöll Sigurdís Magnúsdóttir, Heiða Hringsdóttir, Hólmfríður Brynja Heimisdóttir, Ingvi Örn Friðriksson, Þórdís Rögnvaldsdóttir, Stefanía Aradóttir, Ellen Ýr Gunnlaugsdóttir, Kristín Valsdóttir, Una Pálmadóttir, Þorbjörg Una Þorsteinsdóttir, Hallgrímur Anton Þorsteinsson, Guðmundur Már Guðmundsson, Ari Jóhann Júlíusson, Einar Már Harðarson, Darri Sigurvin Magnússon, Ómar Freyr Sævarsson, Ingibjörg María Ingvadóttir, Helga Guðmundsdóttir og Hólmfríður Sigurðardóttir

From the other side of the Ólafsfjörður tunnel, children from Football Club Leiftur received the torch and ran with us for a few kilometers. The Leiftur children had to content with strong winds, which they were able to disregard, getting a lot of joy from this experience. The names of the children from Leiftur are: Kristín Rögnvaldsdóttir, Regína Sveinsdóttir, Anna María Sigurlaugsdóttir, Eva Rún Þorsteinsdóttir, Sonja Geirsdóttir, Guðrún Elísabet Guðmundsdóttir, Ólafur M Jóakimsson, Kristófer Númi Hlynsson, Ingimar Eli Hlynsson, Þorsteinn Sigursveinsson.

After all of these five groups of runners had participated, the World Harmony Runners were on their own. However, there was little left to cover by now, because of all the help earlier. The rest of the day thus turned into an easy, relaxed run in beautiful scenery and sunshine. Well, the wind was blowing in our faces, but hey! this is Iceland. We don't expect to have good weather anyway.
