Iceland 5 July: Fagurhólsmýri - Höfn
The run today started at Fagurhólsmýri, from where Sólrún Sigurjónsdóttir, Karl Heimir Einarsson and Þorsteinn Jóhannesson carried the torch with us all the way to Jökulsárlón, the Vatnajökull glacier lagoon.
The World Harmony Runners were carried on a boat onto the lagoon by Arnór Fjölnisson. The lagoon boatride was quite an experience for our foreign runners and will probably be one of their most treasured memories from this homeric run around Iceland.
Anna María Steinke, tour guide at Jökulsárlón, carried the torch onwards and had to content with an agressive flock of arctic tern who seemed to care little about the World Harmony Run's message. Anna María, undaunted, ran all the way to Fellsá, upon which the World Harmony Runners carried the torch solo for awhile until they came upon the farmhouse Hali.
The children from Hali were all enthusiastic to run with us. Their names are Magdalena Sigurðardóttir, Sæbjörn Þór Þórbergsson, Þórbergur Friðriksson, Þóranna Lilja Þórbergsdóttir and Lára Björg Friðriksdóttir, and they are cousins. Our goal was to run along with the children to Hrolllaugsstaðir and they ran with us with great joy, passing the torch amongst each other. After a short while the children became tired, as could be expected. The exception was the six year old girl Magdalena, who wanted by all means to continue even after her cousins had given up. Her running partner was Neelabha, who is a kindergarden teacher in her native Czech Republic.
Running hand in hand the two of them played a game where they imitated all kinds of animals, like birds and sheep, each imitation invariably followed by a hearty laughter. After a while Magdalena was asked if she was not tired, to which she replied no. She continued and patiently explained to the surprised adults that the secret why she could run so much was because she breathed deep and fast. Before we knew her pink boots had carried Magdalena all the way to Hrolllaugsstaðir, where we said our goodbyes to these wonderful children. But the exceptional, if unexpected, friendship between Magdalena and Neelabha, remains with us as one of the sweetest memories from today.
The final stretch of the day, leading towards the town of Höfn í Hornafirði, was run in the very pleasant company of schoolchildren from Höfn and those from the Youth Sports Club Máni.
