8. Mervyn Hancock
September 19
Mervyn Hancock is one of Palmerston North's ‘unsung heroes’. At 82 years-old, he has served the people of this city in many different areas, helping to create harmony at a deeper level in people's everyday lives.
Serving as a relationship consultant, a social worker in his private practice, and a family councellor, Mervyn has a genuine concern for the health, happiness and wellbeing of all people in the community. Mervyn has a very strong connection with Massey University, counselling, and lecturing in the social work unit.
Mervyn has connections with the Ministry of Health, and worked as a district Child Welfare Officer, and also, with Alcohol and Drug dependence and Mental Health. He has a great deal of interest in the work of volunteers and the huge contribution they make to society, and of course Mervyn does a whole lot of volunteer work himself!
Mervyn has also played a major role in setting up and encouraging the City to go through with the International Pacific College, an amazing educational asset to Palmerston North. He maintains a strong connection with all at the College, supporting the cultural diversity of Palmerston North, connecting it many global links.
Mervyn has a life long connection with the Church and support of the Methodist Social Service Centre. He has five grandchildren now and rejoices in the strength, warmth and vitality of his extended family.
Mervyn was nominated by Palmerston North Rotary Club, member Stuart Schwartz.
