Japan 27 April: 阿蘇市～雲仙市 Aso - Unzen
宿泊先の国立阿蘇青年の家で朝礼がある。ここは青少年の研修場所になっていて、毎朝宿泊している団体がそれぞれ自分の団体の紹介をする。私たちハーモニー・ランも3分間のプレゼンテーションをする。
At 7.15 AM we introduced ourselves during the morning assembly with 450 highschool students from two schools at Kokuritsu Aso Seinen no Ie (The National Aso Youth House). The camp had also served as our accommodation.
朝礼のあと、ほっと一息朝ごはん。日本の企画・運営チームからの面々。左前から、コースを緻密にすべて計画した桃原。右前は一年のうち大半をアフリカでチンパンジーの研究をして過ごす長谷川。前夜からチームに合流。左後はアドリアン。バイリンガルのスキルで学校での交流プログラムの通訳やコンビニで食べ物や飲み物の説明。右後ろは吉田。宿泊施設の担当など、いつもハイスピードでランを切り盛り。海外からのメンバーは一同感謝。
A well deserved breakfast. Our Japanese team: Local coordinator Krutananda (front left) planned all the roadwork for the entire run. Tetsuya (front right) spends most of his time in Africa researching chimpanzees. We are very happy he's here. Adrian (back left) is instrumental in translating for us, and is an excellent guide. Local coordinator Sudasa (back right) is a real dynamo. He is usually seen whizzing around at top speed serving the runners and the other coordinators. In general we are all deeply impressed and inspired by our Japanese team.

「日本の子どもたちがかぶっているヘルメットがいい！」と海外からのランナーのコメント。本国のものといったい何が違うのかわからないが...

さて、今日も３つのチームに分かれて交流プログラムとランを行います。この日のランの模様は、テレビ熊本、くまもと県民テレビで放映されました。また熊本日日新聞に記事が掲載されました。
We were split into 3 teams today to cover the run as wel as visiting a few schools. TKU (Kumamoto TV) and KKT(Kumamoto Kenmin TV) broadcasted a news story on our programs of the day. An article appeared in Kumamoto Nichinichi Newspaper.
Ａチームの本日の訪問先は熊本市立西原小学校。5-6年生の240名が温かくむかえてくださる。1人1人トーチを持つ生徒。皆美しい顔をしている。

その後Ａチームは57号を走り、今日の担当50ｋｍを5人でカバーする。道路を一人ずつしか走れないため、一人が走る距離が短い。皆走りたくてしかたがない。途中コンビニで昼食。ドリンクなどゲット。サンクスのデザートが人気ＮＯ．1.

今日のために万国旗を掲げて待っていてくれました。とってもやさしそうな園長先生に感謝状とシュリ・チンモイ作の「ワールドハーモニー」と題された絵を贈呈。

かわいい子どもさんたち、やさしい先生、あそひかり幼稚園の皆さん、どうもありがとうございました！とっても素敵な時間でした。

アドリアンの走る番。彼のおかげでメンバーは食糧ゲットに大助かり。みんな日本語の表示が読めないもんね...
Having Adrian along is essential when wanting to get something to eat. Most of the team otherwise have no clue what they would be getting.
Ａチームの後部座席ドアが開いたままで出発してしまい、ジョセフのカバンがすべり落ちてしまった。気づかずに走っていたが、その模様を目撃した女性二人（写真後方）は警察に通報。気づいて戻ってきたＡチーム車とおまわりさんが現場についたのがほぼ同時。ジョセフは無事かばんに再会できました！日本人の誠実さに頭が下がります。
An example of Japanese sincerity. The backdoor of the car accidentally left open, Josef's bag fell out on the road. The two Japanese ladies, seen in the background, on finding it called the police. Team A, back-tracking, actually arrived at the same time as the police, and Josef was reunited with his bag. We bow to the Japanese Sincerity.
この事件（？）の一部始終をお母さんと目撃していた男の子。
This little boy and his mother were present at the scene of the lost bag.
季節がら、あちこち（特に農村部）にあげられていた鯉のぼり。「あれは何？」と海外メンバーからの質問に、子どもの日が近づいていることを説明。「子どもの日」 と言いつつも、男の子の日なので、英語ではボーイズ・デーと訳される。「ガールズ・デーもあるの？」との質問に、おひなさまの説明もする。
These carp flags can be seen all over Japan this time of year. They are to celebrate Boy's Day which is 5th May. Papa carp, Mama carp and child carp. (There is also a Girls day, celebrated March 3rd, when the girls dress in traditional kimonos and have ceremonies.)
Ｂチーム2件目の訪問先は阿蘇黒川保育園。雨の中、ホールで待っていてくださる3歳児から5歳児までの子どもさんのもとへ！

寸劇クイズ。一緒に走っているお友達の足が痛くなったので助けて一緒に走ってあげた... 「これはハーモニーかな？」「イエ～ス！」
For the smaller kids we perform skits, where they can choose if we are presenting a harmonious situation or an unharmonious situation, by showing thumbs up or down. Helping your friend up after an accident...THUMBS UP!
テーマソング振り付けのフィナーレ。子どもたちも先生も、楽しさいっぱい！一緒に踊ってくれました！
...of tomorrows SUUUUN! This was loads of fun. The kids got so excited at the running part.
黒川保育園、そして今回訪れた他の学校や幼稚園にも言えることですが、先生方がみなとっても優しくていい方。ミニリレーで近くを走って通り過ぎるとき、「Thank you, Thank you」と声をかけてくださる。こうやってハーモニーランのチームでいろいろな場所を訪れると、なんて素敵な世界に住んでいるんだろう、と思える素晴らしい体験ができる。ありがたい。
The teachers in all the schools were incredibly nice and sweet. Some of them were repeating "Thank you, Thank you" everytime one of us runners came near. We were really moved. Being on the Harmony Run makes one realize what a wonderful world we live in (at least how it can be, when we respect each other and strive for what is good in us and unites us, rather than look for what separates us).

これはゴールデン・ゲートというゲーム。トーチを持ったアメリカのプランローバを先頭に、汽車ぽっぽのように一列になってランナーの作るゲートをくぐる。ぐるぐるまわってみんな大喜び。小さな瞳を輝かせて、ゲートの私たちを見上げ、「ありがとう！ありがとう！」と言いながらくぐって行く子どもたちも。感動です。
...travelling under the the golden gate. For us runners it is a real joy to see the children as the pass through, their faces beaming with joy. Some looking innocently at us with wide open eyes.
園長先生はプログラム終了後、コーヒーとお菓子を振る舞って下さいました。その時のエピソードに一同爆笑。「トーチを持って走られてると言うから、筋肉ムキムキの強面の方たちがいらっしゃると思ってたんです。それで、2歳児もいるんですけど、怖がらせたらかわいそうなので、出さなかったんです。でもやさしい方たちばかりで...こんなに楽しいって知ってたら...他の先生とも、シュミレーションとずいぶん違うね、と言い合ってました。」
Our World Harmony posters, painted by Sri Chinmoy, the founder of the run, were greatly appreciated in the schools.
After the program, the principal kindly offered us coffee and sweets. What she confessed then made us all burst into laughter! She and her staff had thought we must be big macho runners to be able to run with a torch. They decided not to bring their 2 year olds to the program so as not to scare them. To their wide surprise, we looked kind and gentle, now they felt the 2 year olds could have been included! It was so much fun for all of them.

These girls along with many of the kids showed tremendous exuberance during the ceremony. What smiles!

なぜかメンバー全員、マンガに変身！ 何でもかわいいマンガになっている日本の掲示物が海外ランナーには受けたようで、写真をたくさんとっていました。
For a while we all turned anime, which sometimes happens in Japan. You usually always turn back to normal again, though. Just sweeter.
フェリーではかもめに餌をやることもできます。ジョセフは指も食べられそうに...
The seagulls were truly a delight to behold. Josef had his fingers nibbled quite a bit while feeding them.
雲仙市につくと、宿に向かう途中にうどん屋さんを見つけ、夕食の場となる。外の池にいたコイに興味深々、写真をいっぱいとっていた。

注文したそば定食。走って交流して一日が終わるとおなかぺこぺこ。ほぼ全員、毎日和食でも舌鼓をうっていました。
