今日の英語版のリポートはすべて（英語）俳句！とても日本語訳はできませんが、日本語版も俳句のこころを少しでも伝えられるように、簡潔に。

With all the multifarious activities going on on the World Harmony Run, you would think you would have to be crazy to attempt to write a report entirely in Haiku... Well, lets just call it enthusiastic. And so we bring you...

英語で俳句なんてどうやって書くんだ？と思う読者の方もいらっしゃるでしょうが、これが結構海外では書かれているんですね。学校の授業に取り入れているところもあるし。どうするかというと、英語のシラブル（音節）を５－７－５のリズムでとって書くのです。今回ジャンもそのリズムの中にハーモニー・ランのエッセンスを詰め込んでみたようです。

THE HAIKU REPORT

The Haiku is a traditional Japanese form of poem. Often meditative and evoking a contemplative atmostphere. They often depict nature's beauty, wisdom, a high ideal of truth, and/or the higher inner life of man. The most common form known to us in the west is this:

Line 1: 5 syllables

Line 2: 7 syllables

Line 3: 5 syllables

My goal was to use the structure. Some of them are just for fun, or to tell the story, but hope I might have one or two, which would actually resemble a japanese Haiku...

竹林にみる日本の美。

緑が目にしみる。

 

Japan, Beauty's Land,

Bamboo forests, lush and green,

Balsam for our eyes.

山あいの松の木々に

静寂と平穏を感じる。

 

Forests, pine and leaf,

They tranquil and peaceful lie,

On the mountain-side.

今日迎えるランを思い心躍る。

 

Anticipating,

The resounding step and stride,

Of our runners feet.

笑顔のランナーに、

道端の花さえ笑みをうかべ芳しさを増す。

 

A beautiful Smile,

Adds even to the flowers,

Fragrance and Beauty.

咲き誇る桜の誇らしき美しさは

見る者の心を静める。

 

Sakura blossoms,

They reveal graceful beauty,

And silence the mind.

ハーモニーの喜びが勝利し、

光の花冠が現れる。

 

For the victory,

of Harmony-Joy, we bring,

A Garland of Light.

野に咲く花に心は躍り、

目は輝く。

 

Small and cute flowers,

can make the heart skip faster,

And brighten the eyes.

飛び入り参加の大学生4人。7か月休学して

ママチャリで日本一周しているそう。

はつらつして素直で、元気！

日本の将来は明るい。

 

An unexpected,

Burst of smiles and gleaming eyes.

Bless us on the road.

シベリアのスタースと4人は早くも

意気投合。

さわやかに走り抜けます。

 

Quickly ignited,

Eagerness to join the fun,

And share the Friendship.

完走の後は、至上の喜び。

みんなで「やったぜ！」

 

At the journey's goal,

Ecstacy's effulgent Bliss,

Is rightfully won.

笑顔で手をふれば

よろこびがパワフルに広がる。

 

A smile and a wave,

Tremendous power do have,

To spread happinness.

ひとつになる喜び、参加自由、

飛び入り大歓迎！

山あいの町を流れる

人生の川。

静寂の眺め。

 

The river of life,

Flows through the high mountain town,

Gives a serene scene.

走るのが好き？

みんながハッピーになれるもの！

走り続けてみればわかるよ。

 

Do you love running?

It makes one happy. It's true!

Persevere, you'll see!

ぬいぐるみさんたちの知っている

とっておきのヒミツ。

楽しいひと時はみんなといっしょにね！

 

Teddy's know the fact:

Good times are meant to be shared.

Let us learn from them.

ゴジラは見ている。

上から見ている。

 

Godzilla watches,

From his high and august seat,

With a might "Rrrraarrrhh".

地元の方たちとの出会い。

トーチを一緒にもつ喜び。

 

A pleasant surprise:

A runner holding a torch,

Happily runs by.

トーチに燃料補給。

そっとやらないと

うまく注げない。

 

Refuelling the torch,

Requires some precision.

A delicate art.

上り坂は多い。

ひざが強くなる。

にっこりと上ろうよ。

 

Many slopes to climb,

Excellent for the knees, indeed,

We climb happily.

Verdant foliage,

Leafy amber fire-glow,

A clear sky above.

山の上で2チームが偶然落ち合う。

嬉しい驚き。

（ランナーは3チームに分かれて違うスケジュールで動いていた。）

 

On the mountain-top,

A chance meeting of two teams.

A happy moment.

(The runners were divided into 3 teams with different schedules, tasks and stretches to run)

何事かと足を止め訪ねてきた先生。

初めて知ったハーモニー・ランのため

トーチを握ってくださいます。

 

Inspired teacher,

Stops to see what's going on,

learning something new.

山あいの農村の風景。

静寂そのもの。

 

The mountains shelter,

Fields and grass and trees below

Tranquil in their care.

下り坂は

足にまかせて力強く

走り抜ける。

 

Speeding down the streets,

Roads surrender to our feet,

The town whizzes by.

仏様の祝福。

内に真実を見つけよ―

そう目が語りかけているよう。

 

The Buddhas Blessing,

His eyes convey his message,

"Find the Truth within".

暗くさびしく肌寒い

トンネルをひたすら走る

人生にはそんな時もある。

 

Life can be at times,

Like going through a tunnel,

Dark, austere and cold.

でも無事トンネルを抜けたら

友だちと再開して

心も温まる。

 

But, once through and safe,

With friends again united,

Happy is the heart.

トーチの光が力強く

輝き続ける。

強さをまし、大きくなりながら。

 

The supernal light,

Continues to shine and glow,

Gains in strength and scope.

負け戦で最後に敵を退け

主の自害を助けた家来。

御本堂の６つの穴は

そのとき銃口を向けるのに使われた。

 

Six square gun-turrets,

To keep the enemy away,

To buy some more time.

(The lady with the torch, here in Taketa town, told us a story about how when the master of the house knew for sure that he was going to lose, he would send his servants upstairs to shoot through the turrets at the approaching enemy, in order to buy him enough time to commit harakiri in the hallway. It was thought that to be killed by the enemy was the worst way to die, so when the end was certain, to take ones own life was preferred. After a story like that can anyone question the importance of harmony?)

お国のために殺害された

警察官。

今は称えの銅像となる。

 

Though a patriot,

Dishonored was he and slain,

Now redeemed is he.

(The lady also told us about this police officer who was very unpopular in his time. He was killed and thrown into the nearby river, where he lay for a long time, because nobody bothered to get him from there, because nobody liked him. Later though people realised that he actually was a patriot and loved his country, and was indeed a noble man. A monk felt sorry for him and had his statue made. The gun is pointing to the side, which indicates that he is not threatening anyone, but is a sign that he is ready to protect his motherland.)

山肌を覆う墓地は

威厳を漂わせている。

 

With rare dignity,

Graves run up the mountain-side,

Hallowing the grounds.

Deity's protect,

The grounds above: carved in stone,

They forever last.

心優しき方々との

出会い。

何物にも代えがたい喜び。

 

It is such a joy,

To meet friends who share you love,

Of goodness and care.

朱門の威厳。

一日の終わりを告げるラン。

 

Magnificent gate,

Reacing towards the sky, you mark,

Our days final steps.

コースを走り終え、

感謝の花を一輪捧げます。

 

The end of the road,

Our running done, we offer,

Gratitude-Flower.

自分を勇気づけてくれる友だちが

いるって

本当にいいものだ。

 

It is always nice,

To have a sweet and kind friend,

To encourage you.

熟練の指と確信の心が

奏でるメロディーに

聞く者の心は空まで高く！

 

A wave of music,

From skilled fingers, and sure heart,

Lifts us to the skies.

青いジャージに身を包んだ

450人の生徒さん達。

食堂で夕食を共にしました。

 

Four hundred fifty,

Vivacious children in blue,

Share our dining hall.

たまには逆立ちもいいものだ。

新しい角度で

ものが見られる。

 

Sometimes it is good,

To stand on your head, you know,

A new view behold.

 

連日のハードスケジュールにもかかわらず、夜中の1：45までかかって俳句を書き、翌朝も修正を加えこのレポートを完成させたジャン。しかも英語はネイティブではない。文才たっぷりの頼りになるリポーターです。

A note on the Haiku-writing-journey:

As the clock ticked 1.45 am last night, and sleepy as I was, I still hadn't finished the report, I, most understandably, decided that this would be the last time I ever venture such a thing as this. However, now, the next morning, rested, and just having finished the last Haiku, ready to upload, I feel at peace and satisfied, open again to whatever the inspiration-bird may bring in the future. And that is really something to be grateful for.
