アジアランのスタート国日本での最初のプログラムは武蔵大学で行われた。実行委員メンバーの砂押ホロシタが担当する授業へ、本部実行委員長Salilと フィンランドのメンバーJanがゲストスピーカーとして訪れた。最初は二年生の英語講読の授業だ。

We started the day by visiting Musashi University. We were invited to present the World Harmony Run in 2 of Harashita Sunaoshi's classes there. In addition to being a busy University Professor, Harashita is also a local coordinator for the WHR in Japan.

The first class was sophomore English Reading.

学生は英語でのレクチャーを熱心に聴きとろうとしていた。

It is indeed an interesting topic. Salil makes a well received introduction.

そしてトーチを一人一人握り、ハーモニーのある世界を心に願う。

ホロシタもトーチを握った。改めて順番が回ってくると気恥ずかしいものだ。

Salilの説明が終わると、学生は小グループに分かれてハーモニー・ランに関する質問を考えた。そしてグループごとに英語で質問。唯一、通訳してくださ いと頼まれたグループの質問はなかなか興味深かった。「お二人はとてもやさしい目とやさしい笑顔をしていますが、これはワールドハーモニー・ランをしてい るからそうなるのですか、それともワールドハーモニー・ランの源がやさしさなんですか？」

これに対するSalilの答えは、どちらが先とは言えない。ただ自分の経験から言えることは、ハーモニー・ランには本当にたくさんのポジティブなエネル ギーが流れていて、メンバーも参加した人も自分のポジティブな面が前面にでてくる。それで、 ずっといいエネルギーの中にいることになる、というもの。

Groups of students prepared interesting and insightful questions. One of them was: "I see that the runners have gentle eyes and kind smiles. Is this coming from doing the World Harmony Run, or is kindness and gentlness the source of the World Harmony Run?" Salil answered that it is hard to say which comes first. The WHR is a phenomenom that in itself attracts an incredible amount of positive energy. We get to experience people expressing their goodwill, their love, their concern, their joy, their hopes and dreams for a better world. Thus anyone who participates cannot help but be enriched in terms of happinness and many other good qualities.

90分授業をフルに使ったプレゼンテーション。ランの趣旨、目指すものについてシェアする機会が持ててとても楽しいひと時でした。

We thoroughly enjoyed presenting and discussing the goals and ideals of the run during the 90 minute program.

そしてもう1つ、午後の授業は「異文化コミュニケーション論」。

The next class was Intercultural Communication.

履修者は約80名。

It was a class of 80 students.

武蔵大学を後にしお邪魔したのは宮城野部屋の横綱白鳳翔関。報道陣も多数待ち受ける中、横綱は待っていてくださった。モンゴル出身の横綱として飛躍的な活躍をされ、たくさんの人をインスパイアし、日本とモンゴルだけでなく、世界中の人に勇気と元気を与えている存在。そしてモンゴルと日本の人、文化、心をつ なげることに多大な貢献をしている存在。そんな横綱白鳳関を称え、感謝の気持ちをこめてトーチ・べアラー賞（「トーチを掲げる人」賞）を授与しました。

Next we were very fortunate to meet with Japan's leading sumo wrestler, Hakuhō Shō. He is the only active yokozuna in 2010. Yokozuna is the highest rank in sumo wrestling. He has won thirteen yusho, or tournament, championships to date. Last year, 2009, he broke the record for most wins within a calendar year, winning 86 out of 90 bouts. Hakuhō Shō is originally from Ulan Bator, Mongolia. He is incredibly popular in Japan. When we asked the students in the Musashi University if they knew the special person we were going to meet, they all knew him. Harashita told us the students were quite amused, because it was quite obvious that everybody would know who this celebrated icon is.

室内であるにもかかわらず、自らトーチに火を灯すよう促してくださった横綱。やさしい方です。

Sumo wrestling is a traditional and even sacred sport in Japan. Very few are granted access to the sumo wrestlers' training stables. So, we were indeed very honoured to be received there in Hakuhō Shō's Miyagino Stable.

熱心に取材をされている報道陣の方々。横綱の報道陣とのとても気さくなやりとりが印象的でした。なにかファミリーといった印象を受けました。これは横綱と 記者の方々のお人柄のなせる技でしょうか。

Quite a few from the press were also allowed to come that day.

メダルを首にかけ、賞を受賞された横綱。授与理由をSalilがお伝えすると、非常に感じ入って下さったようで、「嬉しいですね。今度の力士会でこれをみ んなに見せようと思っています。私一人でこれをもらったとは思っていない。他の力士みなを代表していただいたと思っています。 」という謙虚なお言葉。

Hakuhō Shō received The World Harmony Run Torch Bearer Award for his outstanding achievements in the world of sumo wrestling, and for bridging Japan and Mongolia in harmony with love, reverance and humility, qualities which were apparent in his nature.

フィンランド出身のメンバーJan Klaileを歓迎する横綱。

奇しくも今日は宮城野部屋の土俵を新しくした日。「今日は雨ですが、『雨降って地固まる』ということわざがあるでしょう。ハーモニー・ランのみなさんがこ うしてこのような日に来てくださってとても縁起がいい気がします。」と横綱。Salilが「こちらこそ、ユーラシア・ランで20,000km走るに先駆け て横綱にお会いできて本当に光栄です。強さをいただいている気がします。」と答えると、「私には想像もできない苦労もあるでしょうが、がんばって走り切っ てください。」と励ましの言葉をいただいた。

横綱白鳳関にお会いした印象は、強靭な体躯に良い姿勢、シンプルさ、やさしさ、謙虚さ、子供のような無邪気さ、真摯な姿勢を兼ね備えた方。ユーモアのセンスもたっぷりに、報道陣の質問に答えてらっしゃったのが印象的でした。

By coincidence they just had a new sumo ring made at Miyagino Stable (in the back of the photo). Mr. Yokozuna said, "It's been raining today. You know there is a saying in Japanese: Rain makes the ground solid. I feel it is quite auspicious that you all came on this special day. I am grateful." In response Salil told him, "It is we who feel grateful you are having us today. Before the start of our 20,000km Relay in Asia, I feel that you are giving us strength." Then added, "There must be all kinds of challgenges that I would not be able to imagine. All the best for your Run."

ユーラシア・ランの始まりにふさわしい素晴らしい一日でした。
