Japan 30 July: Makino – Kyoto

Today, we slept in the car. There was enough space for us because Mr. Nagumo had to leave for home in the evening. Therefore, there were only three of us (Mr. Ito, Victor, Karel) in the morning and only Mr. Ito could drive. So Victor and Karel had to run. We started at 7:30 after buying our breakfast in a small convenience store and made our way along the coast of lake Biwa. Biwa is the largest lake in Japan and it is very beautiful with mountains surrounding it. It was quite hot but cloudy and a pleasant breeze was coming from the lake, so we were very happy to run with the torch.

On the way we met three children with two young men on bicycles who were taking the same route as we were – from Fukui to Kobe. We took pictures with the torch and encouraged each other.

Later in the morning we picked up Mrs. Morohoshi and Mr. Hasegawa at a nearby station.

Mrs. Morohoshi brought a delicious lunch that she made and Mr. Hasegawa ran about 30km very fast this day.

In the afternoon, a 19-year old student, Mr. Kubota joined us too and it was joyful in the car.

We continued running between the lake and the Kosei train line. It was getting hotter and hotter and we came into the city – first Otsu, which continued to Yamashina and Kyoto. It was more difficult to run but there were more chances to introduce World Harmony Run to the people in the streets.

For example, we met a runner waiting on red light and invited him to run with us which he, after some hesitation, did and was very happy at the end.

Or a clerk ran out of his optic shop to ask what was going on and to hold the torch.

Our goal was at Kumiyama town-hall.
