Caribbean 9 June: St. Kitts and Nevis
Last year the World Harmony Run in Saint Kitts and Nevis was greeted by tropical storm Arlene. This year the weather was perfect. Leroy Green and Star Brown from the Ministry of Sports put on a shining event.
The Day began with a visit to the Chief Cabinet Secretary, J. Llewellyn Edmeade. He warmly received the team on behalf of the Prime Minister who was off island. He thanked the runners and praised the ideas of the run.
Afterwards it was off to two primary schools on opposite sides of Basseterre, the capital. The Tucker Clarke Primary School (in Green) where the children performed the nation anthem of Saint Kitts and Nevis and Dr. William Connor Primary School (in pink) where the run would start a few hours later.
Three o clock saw the start of the run. The Hon. Sam Condor, Deputy Prime Minister, came out and ran for the second year in a row.
He led the run the whole way through the streets of Basseterre. Behind him was over a hundred children from various schools. They ran through winding streets of the capital as people lined the street to cheer on the runners.
Finishing the run the Hon. Sam Condor addressed the crowd stressing the importance of harmony between cultures and races as well as wishing the founder Sri Chinmoy a happy 75th birthday.
View from the Ocean Terrace Restaurant.
Peter at the Ocean Terrace Inn kindly arranged for lunch at the hotel and that evening he had the Coronets Steel Orchestra perform a rousing version of the World Harmony Run theme song. The nine-piece orchestra performed the song under the moonlight.
Pauline and Alexander provided a gourmet meal for the team at Serendipity . A trip to St Kitts without visiting Serendipity would be incomplete.
Joe at the Circus Grill provided the team with dinner one night.
