Caribbean 30 May: Trinidad and Tobago

It's not who you know but who you meet and in Trinidad we met Jason Gooding, a national champion triathlete with a big heart and a "Go for it!" attitude. Jason (holding the microphone) met us the day before our run and put together a great event and arranged TV coverage for it to boot.

After out exhausting trip from Suriname which lasted about 9 hours including 3 hours driving on switchbacks through some of the most beautiful rainforest we've ever seen we had a swim and a run at our own private beach, as you do when staying on the north coast of Trinidad.

We were staying at a marvellous hotel called Laguna Mar , courtesy of its owner Denise. It is a truly beautiful place totally peaceful about 60 km from the hustle and bustle of Port of Spain the main city.

Today was a national holiday "Indian Arrival Day" marking the day the first Indian nationals arrived in Trinidad. So there were lots of Indians enjoying the beautiful nature spots Trinidad has to offer. As you can see the main idea of the holiday is to get wet and stay that way for as long as possible.

In the afternoon we headed into Port of Spain to visit a local orphange and met with Sister Helen Scott who introduced us to the children.

The kids at St. Dominic's school were very cheerful and happy to share some time with us.

Later on in the afternoon we went to Port of Spain's largest park to carry the torch around perimetre of the park. Jason's sister Maria was an enthusiastic participant in the event.

After the run we went back to Jason's place for a shower and then out to dinner with the whole family plus Rudolph Bravo who generously bought us dinner. Thanks to all our new found friends

Thank yous

We would also like to thank Avis for providiing us with a car during our stay in Trinidad.
