Caribbean 25 May: Guyana

Our run for May 25 actually began on the afternoon of May 24. After a very busy day we had a leisurely forty minutes to shower, pack before driving about 5 hours to the other end of the country to spend the night. We woke up to a delicious breakfast of Roti on the river looking out towards Suriname, our next country.

Just as we were about to start running the heavens opened up and it poured. This didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of our accompanying runners.

With the Indian Cricket team playing the West Indies cricket forms a back drop to our journey in Guyana and this young fellow was on his way to cracking a six as we ran by.

The pace was just slow enough that Salil was able to extricate himself from the van and from behind the video camera to run about a mile.

There are all kind of modes of transport in Guyana and this one keeps you dry.

Everywhere the torch brings smiles to peoples faces, it is a magic that never ceases to deliver.

Busy markets lined our route today and we were cheered each step of the way.

We finished our journey to Georgetown arriving after dark and carried the torch into the 40th Anniversary of Independence. Here Yvonne Hinds, wife of Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, holds the torch.

Children performing at the Independence celebration. A fantastic finish to a beautiful event. All thanks to the Ministery of Culture Youth and Sport for arranging everything and looking after our every need.

We would also like to express our heartfelt thanks to Le Meridian Pegasus for so graciously hosting us during our stay in Guyana.

THANKYOU
