Caribbean 28 May: Suriname

We began our day with a visit to the Arya Samaj temple where the head priest welcomed us and lit the torch from the sacred fire burning in the temple.

Smiles abounded as we passed the torch to all the children attending the service.

Ketan and Jitavrata celebrating interfaith harmony where a mosque and a synagogue are neighbor one another reflecting the unity found in Suriname’s multi-cultural society. Later our host Mike and his son Mitchell took us on a very informative visit the Dutch Colonial Fort which is now a museum chronicling the fascinating history of Suriname

Children relay the torch through Independence Square.

Before we began our relay for the day we had a local aerobics group put everyone through their paces with a strenuous workout to warm us up for the 20km run.

The Suriname national cross-country team joined us for the relay with the National Marathon Champion leading off.

Many runners and coaches took part and as usual we made many new friends.

The Minister of Education, Mr. Edwin Wolf, donned his jogging outfit and joined us for the last few kms of the relay.

This young fellow ran the entire 20km with us.

Our fabulous host, coordinator and dear friend Mike Watson celebrating the finish of two days intense World Harmony coordination. A job well done!!

On behalf of World Harmony Caribbean, Salil offers our gratitude for all the arrangements Mike, his son Mitchell and his team put together for our visit.

Many thanks,

Jitavrata, Ketan, Homagni and Salil
