Italy 21 June: Arezzo - Firenze
We started into the hills around Arezzo; fortunately, it was not as hot as it had been the days before. To run in the early morning was an almost mystical experience, as there was some morning fog in the hills!
Soon it cleared up and we experienced the province of Toscana from its most beautiful side!
Passing vineyards, olive trees and romantic houses in the old Etruscan style made running quite a picturesque event.
The Italian version of the World Harmony Run!
As we enjoyed running in the countryside, we even took some unpaved streets!
At noon we reached the traditional city of Siena, in the heart of the Toscana. It seemed to us that time had stopped long ago, as we ran through these old streets.
The police led us to the town hall in the main square, the famous piazza where the "Palio", a traditional horse race takes place once a year.
The city representative welcomed us. Unfortunately, we were short of time and could not stay long, as we had to cover another 75 kilometres!
We went further north towards Firenze, the old capital of the Medici. Firenze is probably one of the most beautiful cities in the world (and therefore full of tourists...)
We took the torch on a great sightseeing tour of the city; the police showed us probably all the famous sights - Ponte Vecchio, Il Duomo, Palazzo Pitti, to mention a few...
We ended at the "Piazza della Signoria" in front of the Uffizi, the art museum of Firenze. A well-deserved icecream ended our running day!
Distance: 155km
