Italy 5 April: Orvieta - Roma

Birds singing awoke us at our tranquil guesthouse. The weather started today as it ended yesterday: clear-blue skies. Later in the afternoon it changed to overcast and a little rain. We made our way with the police escort to city of Viterbo where many young children waited to greet us. The youngest children were only 4 years old and they had to be helped to hold the torch. The rest of the children’s ages ranged from 6 to 10 years old and some high school age.

The children were getting even more excited as they were lined up along the road ready to run with us. It was like a Formula One race as if the children were drivers waiting for the green lights.

And when the youngest children were handed the torch and another the Italian national flag and another the World Harmony flag they shot off with complete abandon and shrieking with delight.

Eventually they calmed down and they eagerly listened to each of the international runners introduce themselves. At this international school 35 nations were represented, so we had an amazing representation of the world nations to talk about world harmony. We sang the World Harmony song and they clapped with us loudly.

With the police outriders in front of the departing runners we said our fond farewells to the children.

Today, the runners found their way easily, as the saying goes, “All roads lead to Rome”.

Finally we arrived in Rome, where we ran in the state of Vatican.

On the way we passed the famous Colosseum and other beautiful sites of the eternal city of Rome.

With this, our first part of the journey around Europe finished, we take a little break to attend the global World Harmony Run ceremony in New York. There you can also meet the team as well as on the European website.

We will resume our adventure again on 22 April in Malta .

Distance: 110km
