Spain 14 March: Ronda – La Línea de la Concepción
We were sorry to say goodbye to the Enfrente de Arte Hotel particularly after the best breakfast we could possibly imagine. But as always we had to get a move on.
¡Feliz cumpleaños Zoltan! El miembro más alto del equipo cumple hoy 30 años. Tenemos miedo de que si seguimos alimentándolo no quepa en el coche antes de que lleguemos a Marruecos.
Sentimos despedirnos del Hotel Enfrente de Arte, especialmente después del mejor desayuno que podriamos imaginar. Pero como siempre tenemos que continuar en camino.
This morning started with a TV interview at the Ronda Town Recreation Centre. We also met “The Road Runner Ladies of Ronda”, well that’s what we like to call them. It was great to have these active women join our boy’s team for the morning.
Esta mañana nos encontramos con Nuria del Patronato Deportivo de Lorca, que organizó una entrevista para la televisión en el Polideportivo El Fuerte y convocó a un grupo de entusiastas relevistas que se dieron a conocer como las 'Correcaminos de Ronda'.
, para comenzar el día, ha sido
fantástico tener a este grupo de activas mujeres uniéndose a nuestro equipo, que por ahora es solo masculino.
They even astonished their own personal trainer who didn’t believe they could run as far as they did. Zoltan was a little embarrassed when they started clapping and singing happy birthday to him in Spanish.
Incluso asombraron a su entrenador, que no creía que fueran a correr tanto como lo hicieron. Zoltan se puso rojo cuando comenzaron a aplaudirle y cantarle cumpleaños feliz. Al terminar nos cantaron el himno de Andalucía.
Like yesterday we faced lots of hills and strong gusts of wind but just to make things even more interesting, the road from Ronda to San Pedro was a series of sharp switch backs and blind corners. The beautiful scenery was compensation enough for the difficult conditions.
Igual que ayer, hemos afrontado muchas subidas y fuertes rachas de viento, pero tan solo para hacer las cosas más interesantes, la carretera de Ronda hasta San Pedro consiste en una serie de curvas en zig zag y esquinas sin visibilidad. El hermoso paisaje ha sido compensación suficiente para las difíciles condiciones.
As the team entered the town of San Pedro de Alcántara we had the great pleasure of meeting runners from Club Atletismo San Pedro These super fit athletes look like they must have spent years training in the mountains nearby.
Cuando el equipo se aproximaba a la ciudad de San Pedro de Alcántara, tuvimos el gran placer de pasar el relevo a los corredores del

. Estos corredores están en muy buena forma y parecen haber pasado años entrenando en las montañas de los alrededores.
Our large group was guided by a police escort to the steps of City Hall where we met the Mayor of the City, Mr. Jorge Chacón Jimenez. It was a great experience for the team to meet the Mayor of this great city. He really made us feel welcome.
El ampliado grupo fue guiado por la policía local hasta las escaleras del Ayuntamiento donde fuimos recibidos por el Teniente Alcalde, D. Jorge Chacón Jimenez, y el Delegado de Deportes. Fue un hermoso encuentro y nos hicieron sentir realmente bienvenidos.
We also had a huge press conference with 3 television stations and one newspaper.
Además tuvimos una gran conferencia de prensa con 3 televisiones locales y periódicos.
Things just kept getting better as we ran to Colegio Público San Pedro de Alcántara (Primary School). We had as our guide a lady from the City Hall. She was so inspired she ran in high heels the whole way. Very impressive.
Y el recibimiento continuó mejorando cuando corrimos hasta el Colegio Público San Pedro (escuela primaria). Como guía y coordinadora tuvimos a Isabel, del ayuntamiento, que se sintió sobradamente inspirada como para correr en tacones todo el recorrido. Muy impresionante.
The children formed a pathway for us to run through as we entered the school and everyone had enormous fun running with the torch around the playground.
Los chicos formaron un pasillo por donde pasamos corriendo al entrar en la escuela y todo el mundo se divirtió enormemente corriendo con la antorcha alrededor del patio de juego.
We continued running to our today’s final destination along the Mediterranean seashore. It was the first time we came to the Mediterranean Sea on our journey. What a change comparing to the mountains from today’s morning!
Seguimos corriendo a lo largo de la costa hacia nuestro destino final del día. Era nuestro primer encuentro con el Mar Mediterráneo en nuestro viaje. ¡Un gran cambio comparado con las montañas de esta mañana!
So many cars were cheering us blowing their horns.
En el camino, cantidad de coches nos han animado saludando con el claxon.
Finally we arrived to the city of La Línea de la Concepción where we met our resting place very generously provided by the city.
Finalmente llegamos a La Línea de la Concepción donde el Ayuntamiento nos ha acogido generosamente y ofrecido un excelente lugar para descansar y cenar.
Personal Observation:
Most of the time we find ourselves eating quickly during our break from running so one can’t expect to eat a great range of food out on the road. But as a visitor to southern Europe I am continually blown away by how much bread and cheese we find ourselves eating on the run. I was surprised even more with the eagerness that some members of our team expressed for eating raw carrot at breakfast! Personally I have a general policy of not eating carrots before noon. But that’s part of being on the team, recognizing and accepting people’s differences for as we are learning day after day there is far more that unites us than divides us.

La mayor parte del tiempo nos vemos comiendo rápido durante alguna pausa en la carrera, de modo que uno no puede esperar comer una gran variedad de comida en la ruta. Como visitante en Europa del Sur, estoy asombrado de la cantidad de pan y queso que podemos llegar a comer en la carrera. ¡Pero me sorprendió aún más el entusiasmo de algunos miembros del equipo por tomar zanahorias crudas como desayuno! Personalmente tengo la costumbre general de no comer zanahorias hasta el mediodía. Pero eso es parte de estar en el equipo, reconocer y aceptar las diferencias de las personas, porque como aprendemos día tras día, es más lo que nos une que lo que nos divide.
