Spain 13 March: Sevilla - Ronda
Today we started just outside of Sevilla. We were warned that the landscape was extremely hilly over the next 100kms.
What we didn’t expect were the winds that hit us from the side and the front.
Its times like these that we really appreciate having 2 ultra-distance runners, Namitabha and Mirek, as part of the team.
Our first ceremony was in Algodonales. As we entered the town we were met by children from 2 schools. This cute town nestled in the mountains awoke as we ran through with these smiling children.
In San Jose School we had a great ceremony where the children enjoyed trying to guess which countries we were from.
It was also where we met Warren. To say that Warren was an exceptional boy would be an understatement. You see, Warren was from Chesterfield, UK, and he was ready and willing to join us as we ran the next 30km towards Ronda. He was 9 years old and had already cycled an incredible 30km on his bike. We were sad to say goodbye to him but we had to keep running to the Miguel de Cervantes School a short distance away.
At the school we had another fun ceremony.
To our big surprise, Warren was back and ready to join us again. The team was very honoured to have him guide us through these small streets to the edge of town so we wouldn’t get lost.
Meeting Warren was the highlight of the day and for this reason we are dedicating today’s run to him. Seeing his inspiration and smiling face will keep us going over the coming months. We only hope that we can meet him again when we next pass through Spain.
We had 3 volunteers to finish running the entire last 30km from Algodonales to Ronda, Ondrej, Namitabha and Enrico.
As we entered Ronda we were astounded by its beauty. This town is perched among the cliffs and mountains that are typical of this region of Malaga.
The town is connected by an ancient stone bridge which we ran across as the sun was setting.
The sports department of the city organised some places for us to stay in the Town Recreation Centre and also some events tomorrow.
We are also extremely grateful for the kind and generous hospitality offered to us by the Hotel Enfrente Arte . Even at such late notice this unique hotel, set in a traditional stone and antique wooden building, treated us like part of their family.
Our team was also very fortunate to have dinner at the Hotel La Espanola Restaurant . Fulgencio, Leo and Sonia treated us to a magnificent 3 course meal. We thought it couldn’t get any better and then they brought out a traditional Spanish Flan for desert. Mucha Pinta - delicious!
