Spain 18 March: Montserrat – Bellver De La Cerdanya

Last night after the video we walked around the monastery and took pictures of some of the statues at the monastery grounds.

In the morning we ran around the monastery with a ceiling of clouds just above our heads.

We then descended onto the plains where it began to rain…again. As we headed north on the busy C16 road, the weather began to get worse. By the time we reached the town of Berga at 2 pm the temperature had dropped to 5 degrees.

A police escort led us into the town where we were greeted by the mayor and the head of the fire department. Every May there is a special festival, “La Patum” , in which all the townspeople wear headdresses which are set on fire simultaneously, causing quite a spectacle. The mayor invited us to come next year to light the headdresses with our harmony torch.

After giving us enough food and drink to keep us going for three months, the people of Berga sent us on our way accompanied by a local runner – Kiko Soler - who is a former European Mountain Marathon champion. This year his team won the world championship.

Kiko stayed with us for 12 km but he was so fast that we could hardly keep up with him. As we continued north we ran through several tunnels which was a welcome break from the icy rain.

Approaching our final destination for the day, we could spy traces of snow on the mountaintops. It was strange to think that only two days ago we were enjoying a warm sunny breeze blowing in from the Mediterranean.

Cold and wet we arrived in Bellver De La Cerdanya where we were met by the head of tourism and culture who very kindly wrote a message of good will in our World Harmony Run signature book.
