Iceland 15 May: Reykjavík

We were very fortunate today, that the Mayor of Reykjavík, Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir, took time out from her busy schedule to receive the Harmony Torch and show her support of our ideals of peace and harmony.

Það var okkur öllum mikið gleðiefni að Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir, borgarstjórinn í Reykjavík, gat gefið sér tíma til að taka við Friðarkyndlinum og sýndi þar með stuðning sinn í verki við hugsjónir Friðarhlaupsins.

Significantly, our meeting with the Mayor took place on the City's Day of Multi-cultural Celebration. In the last few decades, Reykjavík has changed from a largely homogeneous society, to a home to people of many different nations and cultures.

Það var við hæfi að fundur okkar við Hönnu Birnu skyldi eiga sér stað á Fjölmenningardegi Reykjavíkurborgar. Síðustu áratugi hefur Reykjavík breyst úr því að vera einsleitt samfélag yfir í heimili fólks af ýmsum þjóðernum og menningarheimum.

The multi-cultural Celebration began with a Parade through central Reykjavík. The organizer of the Parade, Ragnar Óskarsson, asked the World Harmony Run the be the first group in the Parade as we are the perfect example of the aim of the Celebration, harmony among the different nations and cultures in the world.

Fjölmenningarhátíðin hófst á skrúðgöngu í gegnum miðbæ Reykjavíkur. Skipuleggjandi göngunnar, Ragnar Óskarsson, bað Friðarhlaupið að vera fremst í flokki allra hinna fjölbreyttu hópa, þar sem hlaupið er fullkomið dæmi um það sem hátíðin gengur út, frið, vináttu og skilning á milli fólks af öllum bakgrunni.

The Thai community gave a very nice flavour to the parade, with their colourful costumes and sweet manners.
Tælendingarnir settu skemmtilegan blæ á gönguna, með litskrúðugum búningum sínum og indælu viðmóti.

We handed out lots of leaflets about the World Harmony Run and the coming of the European relay to Iceland.
Við dreifðum fullt af dreifimiðum um Friðarhlaupið og væntanlega opnunarathöfn á Íslandi, 30. ágúst.
