Canada 24 September: Nipigon - Dryden

Here comes our first picture of another promising day.

Thanks to Garry from the “Beaver Motel” in Nipigon.

It’s definitely the best motel in town!

Garry even allowed us to use his private washing machine, and made our stay very comfortable.

This morning we had a very nice welcoming at St. Edward School.

The World Harmony Run song was played while we were running into the gym with a group of students following our lead.

We presented the principal Bill Beaucage and the councilor Barry Laukkanin who said a few heartfelt words to the children explaining our message and the purpose of the run

Our team was very much inspired by his kind words.

At the end of the ceremony we passed the torch and ran out with the students. The sports teacher was leading the group for about 2km, keeping a very steady pace.

“Dreams are made if people only try. I believe in miracles…I have to…

because somewhere the hurting must stop.”

Terrance Stanley Fox (1958-1981)

The story about Terry Fox’s life touched us deeply. He made an heroic effort; despite the knowledge of GUARANTEED death, he started to run on one leg across Canada. He had lost his right leg when he was 18 years old through cancer. The outstanding young athlete inspired his nation with his dream – his MARATHON OF HOPE – a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research.

He was determined not to leave this “world of miracles” before a cure had been found, he planned his 5,300 mile marathon.

In 1980 he started running 26 miles a day. The young man had conquered five provinces by the time he had reached Ontario. At mile number 3,339 near Thunder Bay, recurring cancer forced him to give up this run.

“It feels good to give,” he told the people who later donated more than 24 million dollar for cancer research.

At midday we were at Upsala Public School.

The visit at this little charming school gave us so much joy!

They were well prepared for the World Harmony Run and painted most beautiful pictures about harmony for us.

Please check the art slideshow that we will put on in a few days.

He and his assistant Yvonne were running with us for at least one kilometer. That was pretty good!! Respect!

Thank you for the nice Pizza treat at the end of our run, your generosity and hospitality.

We ended this spectacular day in Dryden at a very special school called “Migisi Sahgaigan”. Translated, the name of the school means “Eagle Lake”. We had a ceremony in the library, a beautiful room in which the students along with the teachers perform a purifying ceremony. The room had a very peaceful vibration.

The secretary Lori Kavanaugh showed us around the school after a tasty spaghetti dinner. We have rarely seen a school like this before. The architecture was outstanding with warm colors, wooden material and round inviting shapes. The classroom walls were full of creative art and inspiring messages. A pleasure to look at.

Team B

Aahh, the day begins with Greg and Abichal in the cool cool morning pulling into the first ceremony of the day, Mackenzie Public School in Shuniah Township.

The principal, John Kibzey, does a loop of the gym.

The students do a loop of the playing field

The team offers a certificatte to Mr Kibzey.

We gather together in a gesture of oneness for a group photo.

Signposts to the world including to Neath and Cardiff in Wales, only 5,000 miles...

Back on the Trans-Canada we pay a visit to the Terry Fox Memorial  Memorial. Terry ran to this beautiful spot from St. Johns Newfoundland in 1980 and passed away shortly after reaching here.

On to Ogden Public School

The World Harmony Runners were accompanied into Ogden Community Public School in Thunder Bay by the cross country team.

The school mascot welcomed the runners.

The whole school turned out.

The Principal, Denise Baxter and the School Secretary Johanne hold the Harmony torch with team member Medur.
