Australia June 8: Sydney

Nestled atop Observatory Hill, in one of Sydney's oldest areas, Fort St Primary School is a small school with a diverse population of approximately 65 students.

Though some runners had visited this school as part of last year’s World Harmony Run, it was a real surprise for the others to find something like this in the middle of the city. The school grounds, while being quite small, had glorious views of both the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

As they had no space for an oval, or a large playground, the children ran around the school with so much enthusiasm and excitement. Once wasn’t enough for them, so the principal, Tracy Gray, answered their pleas and allowed them to go around once again. The older children helped the younger once make the distance, and there was a strong sense of family at the school.

St Andrew's Cathedral School was an amazing experience. This boys’ school is situated right in the heart of the city at Town Hall Station, adjacent to St Andrew's Cathedral. (Their school grounds were the shopping mall.) We ran into the auditorium and were greeted by a representative group of senior students who sang the World Harmony Run theme song as we entered.

Later in the afternoon we took the torch to Lady Macquarie's Chair. The area was crowded with people out exercising, both locals and visitors to Sydney. With the harbour as a backdrop, many of the lunch time runners happily took the opportunity to run with the torch.
