Australia June 3: Temora- Cowra

The locals of Temora showed themselves more than ready to prove their reputation as “the friendliest town in New South Wales”. At Temora’s famous Paleface Park, we were welcomed to the town by Mayor Nigel Judd and his wife Helen, who had driven from their home, in a small village 40 kilometres away, just to meet us.

We stopped at Young, a town surrounded by much natural wealth - from cherries (it is the cherry-growing capital of Australia) to magnesium mines. We were greeted by Mayor Gerry Bailey, who talked about the importance of multiculturalism in the community. Of its 13,000 people, Young has over 40 ethnic groups.

We continued to run until sunset. After a week on the Run, Prabuddha departed this evening - but a few new runners have joined the team this weekend. Among them is Rathin, from Canberra, who holds the national record for the fastest 5000 km running time. Yes, that’s 5000 kilometres. He can only stay on the team for a few days, as he will soon be on his way to New York, for the annual Sri Chinmoy 3100-Mile Race (the fourth time he has run this race).

The team tonight is staying at two hotels in Cowra, both of which have been generously provided by their hosts. Some are staying at the Country Comfort Motor Inn , 164 Kendal Street, as guests of proprietors Peter and Sonja Lock. Others are at the Aalana Motor Inn, 161 Kendal Street, thanks to hosts Bob and Marie Watson.
