Australia June 6: Lithgow-Penrith

A winter’s day in the Blue Mountains brought fog, drizzle and much joy to the World Harmony Runners today as we visited Jenolan Caves and Katoomba.

There were spectacular views along the winding road to the Caves, and plenty of kangaroos (even a wild pig) to greet us.

At the Caves, Charles, a friendly park ranger, held the Torch as wished us all the best.

Later in the morning, we visited Katoomba Public School. The school welcomed us with enthusiasm and the children were eager, taking turns to run with the Torch. In a display of teamwork, the children deliberately ran at the same speed as slower children when running as a group.

Our journey down the Great Western Highway brought us into contact with large numbers of fast-moving cars, trucks, buses and motorbikes, whose drivers showed their support by waving and tooting horns. Meanwhile, life went on peacefully in the surrounding countryside.

From today, ultra-marathon man Nick was on the team, visiting from New Zealand - thereby giving us a team that not only aims to represent the world, but also has a runner who lives overseas. Welcome aboard, Nick!

We finished the day at Penrith, just outside the Blue Mountains - and on the outer edges of Sydney.
