Australia June 5: Bathurst- Lithgow
Rathin and his new best friend!
Our first school today was Meadow Flat Public School, a very small school with two teachers and a group of 30 children from rural areas. (Meadow Flat is a small region, rather than an actual town.) The school recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. It was an enthusiastic group, that joined in the song with gusto.
Our next visit was to Lithgow Public School, where some 300 children awaited our presentation. They were excited by the Torch, by the song… and most of all, by the stickers! You can never go wrong with stickers. Children grow out of balloons, and even toys, but they still love stickers.
Rathin left us at the end of the day to head for Sydney, so that he can fly to New York tomorrow and begin the world’s longest foot-race, the Sri Chinmoy 3100-Mile Race. He already has the Australian record for this distance, but he now hopes to transcend his own best time. Good luck, Rathin!
Fortunately, our small team will not be any smaller. Melinda, another ultra-runner, flew in from Geelong this morning to join us. She has also run a few ultra-races, including each leg of the Sri Chinmoy Ultra-Triathlon: 15km swim, 400km cycle and 100km run. A true powerhouse!
From Lithgow, we enter the glorious Blue Mountains, where two hotels in Blackheath have kindly given us accommodation. Thanks to Peter and Eleanor Hutt at the Redleaf Resort (Evans Lookout Road), and Gavin and Ali Brinkman at the High Mountains Motel , the runners are fortunate enough to stay in a luxury to match their surroundings.
