Australia, 31 May: Melbourne & Geelong
We had another bright busy day on the Australian Leg of the World Harmony Run. Williamstown Primary choir sang the World Harmony Run Song as 460 students greeted us at the assembly, while student councillors held the torch. Special thanks to Principal Tilly and Ben for organising the event and to the choir, great stuff.
Hobsons Bay greeted us with a carnival-like atmosphere as students sang and danced to the World Harmony Run Song that they had learnt by heart, it was the best performance we had seen so far and Principal Alan Frost was so inspired that he has invited us back next time. All the children held the torch and came for a great run around the oval. Thanks for the hot drinks afterwards!
Werribee Primary greeted us with many world flags, reminiscent of the opening ceremony of the World Harmony Run in New York where so many people gathered with their home flags.
In Werribee we even coincidentally parked in front of a lawn mower business that had a Harmony model! Here is Antony pointing it out.
Corio West Primary has had a history with the World Harmony Run and were really inspired by the song. Principal Jan Rollingson was very inspired by the run and our web site (!) and held the torch. Well done to the year 3s and 4s who ran with us.
We made a quick dash to Holy Family Catholic School in Bell Park where some very receptive children held the torch and made some great comments on what harmony means to them, here are two girls accepting a certificate of our appreciation.. Thanks to Principal Frank Kearney and to the children for all your wishes and prayers for world harmony.
Team 2 had a joyful but busy day as well. Their first school Newcomb Primary joined in a giant run.
St Thomas Primary in Drysdale really took up the message of harmony. Every class had spent time thinking about harmony with artwork and poems. Here is some of the art from Carlly, entitled "Friendship." Well done to the teachers for really inspiring the children’s participation in school, community, state, country and world harmony!
Surfside Primary then joined in the spirit with a relay and run around the oval while everyone chanted ‘World Harmony!’as loudly as they could.
"Cottage by the Sea" gave us a tour of their home where disadvantaged children can stay. Thanks for the giant vege burgers you served for the runners! Lee Troop (Olympic Marathon Runner and Australian 5000m runner) generously gave up some of his time to inspire the runners and the children. Here is a picture of the girls and the boys present, well done guys on your warm fuzzy envelopes where people fill up each others' envelopes with warm kind thoughts about each other, a great initiative!
St Aloysius Primary arrived on a field trip joining with kids from the "Cottage by the Sea" to sing the song. It is great to see this oneness between children’s groups and schools. Here is a picture with some of the students from St Aloysius.
It was a busy day at "Cottage by the Sea" as the Mayor of Queenscliff, John Bugg arrived and stood for a photo with Lee and the gang. Thanks John for taking part, you have a great city to look after.
The runners then took some time out to enjoy a ride on the Bellarine Peninsula Railway, the beauty and tranquility of this 16 km half hour journey has to be felt to be believed. The entire train is run by volunteers. One man who volunteers said he got so much from the train he feels like a child again, much like the runners as we meet so many happy people on the run.
