Australia 31 July: The Torch Goes to the Snow
On Saturday 23 July, light blue skies, twisted streaky grey-gum trees, sun-screen and snow were just some of the wonders members of the World Harmony Run team were able to experience during their first trip to the snowy peaks of the Kosciuszko National Park in southern New South Wales. The organisers of the NSW Cross Country Ski Championships hosted the torch visit. Ben Sim, the current Australian cross country skiing champion held the torch, along with many of the members of Junior and Senior national teams. The torch then took its first ski around the 7.5 km trail. The perfectly groomed trails took us through the unique snow gums and rocky landscapes that have made Australia one of the most beautiful places to ski in the world. The whole day was an absolute treat.
The following weekend, the World Harmony Run returned to the snow, this time being hosted by the management of Perisher Blue Ski Resort (public relations officer Neil Thew, pictured).
This was an exciting change from the quiet serenity of the cross-country trails. We were located right next to the centre of the resort so that anyone entering or leaving the slopes was given the opportunity to hold the torch and be part of the World Harmony Run experience. This truly was a day for world harmony.
Thousands of people from all over the world had come together to enjoy themselves. We had people dressed like moose, people with wigs, groups of children decked out in bright green vests and crash helmets, ski instructors, people dressed in shorts and T-shirts, snow boarders and many people who just wanted to be there and enjoy the views. Over 600 people enjoyed holding the torch. Another great day for the World Harmony Run team.
