Harmony Run: Oceania
Oceania. Including:
Antarctica, Australia, Cook Islands, East Timor, Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Tonga.
New Zealand |
---|
The World Harmony Run has covered the length of New Zealand, travelling 3,500 km
across both islands, on several occasions since 1991.
Australia
During various winters, the World Harmony Run team has carried the torch to the
snow-capped summit of Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest mountain. This was first done in 1989.
On one day in March 1993, the Run in Australia’s Capital city of Canberra saw
four Canberra landmarks dedicated to world peace, including the city itself.
The World Harmony Run first visited Antarctica in 1989, with a solo marathon run
by an Australian runner (holding the torch for the entire distance at Mawson Base in the Australian Antarctic Territory).
Papa New Guinea |
---|
The relay first visited Papua New Guinea in 1999, starting at the historic Kokoda Track, and finishing with 2,000 runners converging on the Capital city of Port Moresby.
Brisbane, Queensland
A team of runners from 16 nations covered a 15,000-kilometre, 111-day journey around the entire continent of Australia in 2008.
“As a lover of Peace, and a firm believer in the potential for Peace among all people, I applaud the effort and inspiration which has made the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-
Home Peace Run such a success.” - Jose Ramos Horta, President of East Timor, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate (1997).
Ron Clarke, Olympic running legend, Mayor of the Gold Coast Australia, and a National Patron of the World Harmony Run: “The Run will bridge cultural and social barriers, and all the boundaries that separate nation from nation. It shows that athletics can be a powerful force for good.”
Cathy Freeman, legendary Australian athlete, Olympic 400m Champion
Julia Gillard, future Prime Minister of Australia, joins the Run in Geelong, Victoria, in 2007.
Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke (right) and Opposition leader (later Prime
Minister) John Howard held the torch together outside Parliament House, Canberra,
in 1988.
Bob Randall, Australia Aboriginal Leader and National Patron of the 2008 World Harmony Run: “What you stand for is an ultimate reason why we’re here on earth – to live in peace with love for one another, and care – learn to care for all living things, care for each other, care for our environment and care for everything else that is around us.”
