Australia May 31: Bairnsdale-Mt Hotham

The World Harmony Run made its way north into the foothills of the Victorian High Country after a busy morning with the local television crew in Bruthen

At Swifts Creek Primary School we were greeted by all 85 children.

(Photo to be added!)

Omeo Primary School, a cosy school of about 40 students. The children were very excited to see the torch - and run around the school oval, not once, but (at their insistence) twice. The World Harmony Runners were left exhausted by their exuberance.

Grahak ploughed on above the hills, which seemed to get steeper with every passing moment.

Warren Biggs and “Hobby” are workers, building a 30-kilometre fence around Cobungra Station, the largest cattle station in Victoria. They are building one kilometre of fencing a week, and expect to be there for the rest of the year.

Students of the Alpine School come from all over Victoria, are all in Year 9, and only attend the school for one term. The style of teaching seems slightly more casual than most schools, but these kids are trained by specialists in leadership, teamwork and outdoor activities. Most of all, students are specially chosen, among several applicants, for their leadership potential. They are the leaders of the future.

As the World Harmony Runners left, one of the students asked how she could join the Run. She has loved her time at the Alpine School, but they only have 13 days to go - she is counting them down - and she needs a new activity to inspire her.

Thanks to the staff at Omeo Alpine Camp for welcoming us on our coldest day yet!
