Australia, 5 June: Albury to Wagga Wagga, NSW
The day started off with a beautiful sunrise over Lake Hume. What a perfect start to the day.
Kevin our host, greeted us in the morning and we thanked him for his kind hospitality.
We then headed off on our run towards Culcairn along the very aptly named Olympic Way with the Harmony Torch.
Many of the drivers were waving and honking their horns as we were running along the road. It was nice to see people get into the spirit of the World Harmony Run. Along the way we bumped into some cows who seemed to be extremely interested in what we were doing. As we ran past the paddock they were in, a whole herd of them came up to the fence to greet us and made a lot of racket when we attempted to continue running. They were obviously quite fascinated by us or the torch we were carrying.
We finally arrived at Culcairn at 1:30 pm and were greeted along the way by Prime TV who filmed and interviewed us about the World Harmony Run. We then arrived at Jubillee Park in Culcairn where we were greeted by a bunch of youths from the “Culcairn Youth Council” who were participating in a working bee project at the local park. We sang the World Harmony Song for them and then each of the youths held the torch in succession and made a wish for World Harmony. The youth support officer, Serena Kent, made a beautiful wish of “world harmony for all the young people.” It was a very sweet ceremony.
Following the ceremony, we stopped in at the Billabong Café where we enjoyed a delicious vegetarian meal and talked to the owners about the World Harmony Run .
Report from Team B - Today was a real opportunity to really get some miles under our belt along the flat country highway. After completing a marathon only 3 days prior, Tristan logged another 37 km. Stuart who was still feeling the effects of his marathon the previous day ran a steady 6 km before retreating to the van for a well earned break. It is quite amazing how well we have all recovered, it must be all the inspiration we get from holding the Harmony Torch.
At Uranquinty, a small hamlet town on the highway we were very enthusiastically greeted by patrons at the local bakery so we naturally had to stop and say hello, pass the torch around and sample some of their wares.
Our accommodation this evening was at the Carinya Cabins and Caravan Park situated amongst the shady trees of Wagga Wagga near the Charles Sturt University. The place is very tranquil and Trudi and Andrew the proprietors were kindness incarnate assisting us in every way to feel at home in this idyllic bush setting.
