USA 5 May: San Diego
At 9:00 a.m. the team started again from Jyoti-Bihanga restaurant and ran to Wilson Middle School.
The morning was bright and cool which made for pleasant running.
Leading with the torch was Olivia from San Diego, and mother of Uhaina who attends the school where we were going.
We were warmly welcomed by Principal Bernadette Nguyen who deeply appreciates what we are doing.
She arranged a marvelous class in attendance of our ceremony, the children were attentive and enthusiastic.
We were extremely proud to offer our Torch Bearer award to this young lady who was congratualted by her mother.
Also in attendance was Council Representative, Anthony Bernal who presented Principal Nguyen with our Torch Bearer award to congratulate her for her committed service to the children and the community.
Mayor's Representative Ron Lacy also joined us to share the Mayor's encouragement for our efforts.
The highlight of the experience was perhaps the beautiful and meaningful poetry recited by the students about peace, harmony, brotherhood, and equality.
Selections from Langston Hughes, Martin Luther King, Jr. and from student, Julia Julima. Here is one of her original works:
Dreamer by Julia Julima
You call me a dreamer
'Cause my dreams seem unrealistic
You call me a dreamer
'Cause my dreams are optimistic
All I wanna do is expand horizons deepen seas
You say that's impossible
I say, please
I am amazing
Who are you to judge I?
Don't you know if I wanted to I could fly
Shoot! I'll do it right now
Have you agog befuddled wondering how.
The next meeting was scheduled at 2:00 p.m. at Kimball Elementary School in National City.
We again ran from Jyoti-Bihanga to the school covering about eight miles.
The principal of the school, Mrs. Sonia Ruan welcomed us and had an assembly of about 150 children to listen to our presentation.
There were many outstanding people in attendance who have served the community in a powerful fashion. Therefore seven Torch-Bearer awards were presented.
Teachers Mr. Rodriguez 5th grade, Kristina Sotelo 6th grade, Stephanie Buttell-Maxin 2/3rd grade and Mrs. Beneranda Calderon 4th-6th grade were all awarded for their great service and dedication to the education of the students. Awards were also given to two hero's of the community, Mr. Hernandez and Mr. Barajas who work diligently out of the spotlight without looking for appreciation.
Mayor Ron Morrison was in attendance and presented the awards.
The event went very nicely and we concluded with singing the harmony song and watching a video about the run.
Later in the evening we had a chance to share the torch with students of the Pilgrim of the Heart Yoga Studio.
Here are some more excellent photos from the day.
Thanks and stayed tuned for more great adventures from the World Harmony Run...
