Japan 9 May: Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture 宮城県石巻市
ワールドハーモニー・ランチームは日本人数名の他にオーストリア、チェコ、フィンランド、モンゴルのメンバーも加えて、宮城県石巻市の小学校を訪ねました！訪れたのは３か所、計６校です。地震・津波の被害が特に大きかった市の一つである石巻。日帰りのこの特別プログラムは、ランの提唱者シュリ・チンモイが同じく提唱した人道支援プロジェクト、The Oneness-Heart-Tears and Smiles(ワンネスハート・ティアーズ・アンド・スマイルズ）と合同で行われました。通常のハーモニー・ランを行った後で、チェコの子どもたちから日本の子どもたちへ描かれた絵のプレゼントが手渡されました。
An international team (Japan, Austria, Czech, Finland, and Mongolia) paid a special one-day visit to Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. Ishinomaki is one of the most seriously affected areas after the massive earthquake and tsunami back in March. The team met children from 6 elementary schools in 3 locations and had a joyful time together! For this special occasion, the Harmony Run program was held in conjunction with The Oneness-Heart-Tears and Smiles, the Run's founder Sri Chinmoy's humanitarian initiative, which brought ‘Drawings of Love' from children in Czech Republic for each child.
チームが東京を車で出発したのは夜中の２時。現地ではハードスケジュール。近くにお店があるかもわからないので、食糧・燃料を一日分用意しました。これから出会う子どもたちとどんな一日が待っているのか、ドキドキです。でもなにか、いい予感がします...
The van left Tokyo at about 2am on the 9th, equipped with all the food, drinks, and tank-ful of petrol, in case we could not find necessities once there. We were full of anticipation to meet those children in Ishinomaki. Not sure what to expect, but the day seemed auspicious and we were ready to have a good time with them!
In Japan the academic year starts in April. In the tsunami-hit areas of northern Japan, many of the schools had to delay the start of the year a few weeks, so our visit turned out to be shortly after the new academic year had started.
大谷地小学校 School 1: Oyachi Elementary School
朝９時に到着したのは大谷地小学校。ここでは６年生３１人と交流しました。体育館は地震・津波で使えなくなったということで、校舎内のホールでプログラムを行いました。みんな最初は緊張気味？
At 9am we arrived at Oyachi Elementary School, where we met 31 6th graders. The program was held in the hallway, as their gym had been damaged by the earthquake and tsunami.
でもだんだん興味を持って熱心にハーモニー・ランの説明を聞いてくれているようでした。
The children attentively listened to our presentation, including the country-guessing game.
「ハーモニーってなんだろう？ハーモニーって、幸せな気持ちや、思いやりや勇気があること。それはどこにあるでしょう？１人１人の心の中。いつでも心の中にあるよ、見つけられるよ。」
What is harmony? Harmony is happiness. Harmony is empathy and courage. And where is harmony? It is inside our own hearts: anytime, anywhere.
１人１人、ハーモニーを願ってトーチを握ります。
Then each one held the torch, wishing for harmony in each of their hearts.
御別れのハイタッチには、最後に校長先生と教頭先生も加わってくださいました。写真の教頭先生は訪問の前から親切にしていただきました。このあと、時間が押していたため、次の学校までわざわざ車で誘導して下さいました！かなりわかりにくい道のりだったので、私たちだけだったら間違いなく迷ってました！本当にお世話になりました。
At the end of high-fives with the children, the principal and the vice principal (in photo), who had kindly arranged today's visit, joined as well. He was so kind and escorted our van to the next school so that we would not get lost! (and that was really a good idea...)
飯野川第一小学校＆大川小学校 Schools 2 & 3: Iinogawa Daiichi & Okawa Elementary Schools
無事到着した次なる交流先は飯野川第一小学校。津波の後、大川小学校のみなさんも一緒に学んでいます。全校生徒計１７２名と交流しました。体育館は避難所になっていて、プログラムは校庭で行われました。飯野川第一の教頭先生は偶然にもチェコに行かれたことがあり、今回の訪問を最初に承諾して下さいました。その後他の学校も紹介してくださり、このような素晴らしい一日を持つことができました。メンバー一同感謝でいっぱいです。
大川小学校のことはずいぶん報道されていたため、訪問前から、何か特別な気持ちを抱いていました。みんなで心温まり、楽しいひと時が過ごせることを祈って...
Our second location was Iinogawa Daiichi Elementary School, and there, we met the pupils of both Iinogawa Daiichi and Okawa Elementary Schools, 172 of them all together. It was the vice principal of Iinogawa Daiichi who had kindly introduced all the other schools in Ishinomaki to us in the beginning. Okawa Elementary's building had been washed away by the tsunami with quite a few casualties, so the survived children (only about 20%) and teachers were now housed in Iinogawa Daiichi. (And the school gym was being used as one of the shelters.) We had felt special concern and love toward the children and teachers here even prior to the visit because of their particularly challenging situation.
当日はとてもよく晴れた素晴らしい日で、明るい陽の光が子どもたちと私たち全員を勇気づけ、元気づけ、微笑みかけてくれているようでした。地元のテレビ局TBCさん、朝日新聞さんが取材に来られました。
The program was held in the school yard with all the students and teachers of the two schools. It was sunny and bright, as if congratulating the two schools' courage and new beginning. The reporters from a local TV station TBC and the national newspaper Asahi Shimbun were present as well.

オーストリア人と日本人のハーフ、アドリアンと一緒に思いっきり走る子どもたち。
Running around the school track with the torch! Children always love to run. In front is Adrian, who is half Austrian and half Japanese.
プログラムも終わりに近づいたとき、ごく自然にこんな言葉がでてきました。「そろそろお別れの時間がきましたが、私たちは今日みんなとこうして一緒に時間を過ごしたことをずっと心の中で大切にして、忘れません。みんなもいつでも心の中で私たちとまた会えるよ。 ほんとうにどうもありがとう。」
As I announced the end of the program, the following words spontaneously came out of my mouth: "Although we are now going, we will always remember you in our hearts, and you can keep us in your hearts, too. That way, we can meet again anytime.Thank you very much."
全員、チェコのお友だちからの絵（日本語の文字が書いてあるものもたくさん！）と、お菓子と、ハーモニー・ランのステッカーを貰って、チームのメンバー１人１人とハイタッチ！それぞれの教室に帰って行きます。
Each child received a drawing from a friend from Czech Republic, a candy, and a Harmony Run sticker, so their hands were full! Then they lined up to do a high-five with each of us.

And as we continued with high-five farewells,
気がつくと大川小学校の教務主任の先生が列に加わり、ハイタッチを始められました！とても楽しんでおられた様子。もう１つの学校（飯野川第一）の子どもたちと仲良くなりたいんだ、とおっしゃってました。
A senior teacher from Okawa Elementary (in yellow) spontaneously joined us to give high-fives to the children! He said he wanted to get to know the children of the other school this way, and was having a really good time!
子どもたちが教室に戻った後、教頭先生がいらして、「あたたかいプログラムをありがとうございました。子どもたちのこんな笑顔今日初めて見ました。」、「今日ふたつの学校が初めて一緒に行事をしたんです」とおっしゃっていました。メンバー一同感動です。ハーモニー・ランのプログラムを行うと、子どもたちにあげるより、こちらの方がたくさんいただいた、とよく感じますが、今日は特にその感覚が強く、感動もひとしおです。本当にどうもありがとう。みんなの命の力と笑顔にたくさんたくさん勇気をいただきました。
Afterwards the vice principal told us, "Thank you so much for the heart-warming program. This is the first time we saw children smile that broadly after the earthquake. They never showed us such smiles. And today was the very first time the two schools did an activity together as one group." Indeed, it was a very special, memorable visit for us, too... We received so much from the children: their strength, their smiles, their hope. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
橋浦＆相川＆吉浜小学校 Schools 4, 5, & 6: Hashiura, Aikawa, & Yoshihama Elementary Schools
石巻市内小学校訪問の最後は橋浦小学校。ここでは、地震・津波で校舎が使えなくなった相川小学校と吉浜小学校のみなさんが合同で勉強しています。全員で１７５名。橋浦の校長先生曰く、先生方の間で少々戸惑いがあった一方で、子どもたちはこの新しい環境をかなり楽しんでいるとのこと。一学年の人数が増えて、一緒にできるスポーツが増えたり。子どものたくましさ、こだわりのなさ、適応力はすばらしい。
Our final visit of the day was Hashiura Elementary School, where two other schools, Aikawa Elementary and Yoshihama Elementary had joined, as the two schools' buildings had been damaged by the earthquake and tsunami. There were 175 of them all together, and the principal of Hashiura told us that the children were in fact enjoying this new environment as now they had more schoolmates to play with!

そして１人１人、もっとハーモニーが心にあるといいな、と願って、トーチを握ります。アドリアンがまわっているのは入学したての一年生のみなさん。
And each one holds the torch with the hope for having more harmony (strength, courage, hope) inside each of their hearts. With Adrian are the first graders, who just started school.
みんなで走ると笑顔もこぼれます。

お別れのハイタッチの列の最後にはお菓子の入った バスケットが。どれがいいか選ぶのが楽しみで、列がここで詰まってしまうことも多かった！
The children could choose one candy of their choice at the end of the high-fives, and many of them really enjoyed choosing their favourite!
最後には先生方もハイタッチに加わってお菓子を選びます。先生方も楽しんでくださったようです。

おいとまする前に、ハーモニー・ランの写真集をプレゼント。校長先生御三方御一緒に受け取っていただきました。「あたたかいプログラムをありがとうございました。」とここでもおっしゃっていただきました。
Before we parted, the World Harmony Run photo book was presented to the team of principals. Again their comment was, "Thank you very much for the heart-warming program."
とても温かく、満ち足りた気持ちを胸にいだきながら石巻を後にした私たち。ワールドハーモニー・ランのチームをこうやって迎えてくださり、出会いと交流の機会を与えて下さった石巻市と、訪問先の小学校の校長・教頭先生をはじめとする先生方、そしていっしょに遊んでくれた子どもさん達に深い感謝の意を表します。また近い将来会えることを願って！
With a deep sense of satisfaction and joy, we left Ishinomaki. Our gratitude goes to the City of Ishinomaki and the children and teachers of the elementary schools for having us with them for the day and giving us the opportunity to share this special time together. We hope to come back in the near future!
