France 27 June: Hyères - St Mitre les remparts

Running in the midst of old stone walls, smelling the perfume of the lavender and enjoying the fresh silence of a shadowy street... this is the Provence.

The journey started today with a meeting at the ciy hall in Lacadière d’Azur, a typical old city in the south of France. A municipality representative and members of the Peace Movement gave us a most warm welcome.

A few kilometres later, in the City of St Cyr sur mer.

The Mayor enchanted us with his words, “We often forget that thanks to sport, North and South Koreans play in the same football team, and all the Irish people support the same rugby team, whether they come from the south or from the north”.

This city owns one of the 4 originals of the Statue of Liberty; two more are in Paris, and we are still looking for the last one...

A runner from “Courir à St Cyr” joined us along the sea toward La Ciotat. This association of runners often organizes sporting events in the area, to raise money for causes like the Telethon. If you want to see more about their activities and projects you can visit their web site, www.courirastcyr.fr .

The runners accompanied us to La Ciotat.

There we met up again with Jean-Claude Lantuas, who really wanted to introduce the runners to his yoga students.

We passed the famous port of Cassis, a sort of French Acapulco, famous for its high cliffs.

Massilia (Marseille), as the local people affectionately call it, is the biggest city in the south of France, the abode of Zinedine Zidane, a part of France where the accent sounds like a song. We arrived there at the middle of the day and enjoyed a relaxing picnic at Prado’s beach in the middle of the city. We are very grateful to the health food store “Strength-Bliss Indomitable” that kindly offered us a well-balanced meal to sustain the run in a "tasteful" way.

After Marseille, we ran alongside the narrow strip of water joining the étang de Berre and the Mediterranean Sea.
