USA 30 April: Anchorage, AK - Anchorage, AK

Michael Kerosky is the supervisor for the Anchorage School District’s Safe and Drug Free Schools program and has been involved with Resolving Conflicts Creatively Program in the since 1986.

He has implemented programs to assist teachers in programs such as “Change of Heart, Be The Change” to improve the climate and connectedness through prevention in ASD schools. He is also an appointed member of the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.

Mr. Kerosky’s long time dedication and vision to create a harmonious environment in Anchorage schools has earned him the World Harmony Run’s Torch Bearer Award.

Mediators and teachers touch the torch on their way into AT&T Sports Facility in Anchorage held on April 30. This is the first time the rally was held indoors and it was a welcome considering it was held two weeks earlier than normal and there is still snow on the ground in places.

Hundreds of student volunteers are taught the skill of mediation . They are called in to resolve conflicts among the students and make up their lost time in class independently.

There are about 100 first languages spoken in the Anchorage School District.

With a population of only 268,000 people our schools have a cultural diversity unlike most America. Each elementary school is a “mini-world” as one teacher put it.

Anchorage, Alaska can be considered a model for UNESCO’s year of Rapprochement of Cultures thanks to Safe and Drug Free Schools and Resolving Conflicts Creatively Program.

Smiling faces for a future of harmony.
