USA 29 July: NYC Manhattan - NYC summer Camp

Recreation Centers - Summer Camps - Advance Visits

Representatives of the World Harmony Run in New York have begun to visit 24 Recreation Centers and Summer Camps in the 5 boroughs of NYC. These visits are in advance of the big event in Flushing Meadow- Corona Park on 19th August. The run around the USA will be returning to NY for the day's events.

29 July the NY team visited 2 locations in Manhattan

* Alfred E. Smith Recreation Center

* Toney Dapolito Recreation Center

Below are the beginning report and photosof 29 Jul 2010

(see also more images ) in gallery;  Additional Photos and more full reports will be posted here in due course;  Links to city recreation center and Camps are at end

In each location one of the runners gives a short introduction. If the video equipment is available we show a short DVD video (around 6 minutes) that has been very well received.. We then have a very good discussion which includes:

* About the run: How it began; Who was the founder

* The countries the runners present on the day were originally from;  How we can all feel peace and harmony

* The International year 2010; What Languages and symbol are on the Banner for 2010.

* Singing the Harmony Run song;  Becoming a member of the World Harmony Run.

* Some of the other places the run is going and has been;  Famous people who have held the torch.

* What can be done by each recreation center or camp before 19th August; What individual campers can do.

* Upcoming event on Aug 19th in Flushing Meadow Corona Park;  and other items the Individual Camp Counselors want to cover

For the Counselors we also share:

* Tip sheet on how to Prepare Campers for World Harmony Run event at the end of summer.  * Information on Living in Harmony Curriculum adapted for Summer Camps

Below are some brief comments and photos from this days events

Alfred E. Smith Recreation Center

- 80 Catherine Street, Manhattan, NYC

We arrived at the Alfred E. Smith Recreation Center

After the introductory video, we explained many interesting things like this year 2010 proclaimed by the United Nations and UNESCO in support of cultural diversity.

We had some enthusiastic responses to our games..

And much sharing of laughter.

and inquisitiveness (is that spelled correctly?)

The big map helped explain where the Harmnoy Run goes in the USA

We had a chance to sing the Harmony Run song: "...We are the Oneness and Fullness of Tomorrow's sun."

We also had a chance to share harmony...

And begin to pass the torch with a wish or prayer for peace

Between different people...

Then the torch was lit...

And passed...

Some more...

Hand to hand...

Between people...

Heart to heart...

As it has been in local communities around the world...

Sometimes with a bit of awe...

And often with joy...

Appreciation...

To be part...

Of an experience which connects...

With so many.

Now it was time to run a bit...

Striding out and giving high fives to the new runner friend from Macedonia holding the banner...

Some were so excited and talented...

They felt like they had wings and appeared to be flying through the air...

Sharing holding the torch...

We all came together...

In front of the World Harmony Run banner (with the 2010 Logo for the UN and UNESCO International Year) - and under Parks and Recreation sign for Alfred E. Smith Recreation Center.

Thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement.

We are looking forward to seeing you again on the 19th of August. That is when the big event takes place in Flushing Meadows Corona park.

Toney Dapolito Recreation Center

- 3 Clarkson Street, Manhattan, NYC

Next stop for the team was Tony Dapolito Recreation Center

After the introductions...

And answering questions...

We sang the World Harmony theme song together.

And then began...

To pass the torch with...

Our own unique feelings..

Of wishes or prayers for harmony...

Then it was time to run..

We also were able to...

share holding the torch ...

Together in small groups...

Finally we all came in front of the banner to see if we could be loud enough to hear our shouts of "harmony" in the other parks...

What a great place - Thank you to all the organizers and participants.

See you on the 19th of August for the Youth Harmony event at Flushing Meadow -Corona park
