USA 8 May: Hillhouse, MS to Memphis, TN
Our day began with an early run in what I think was Hillhouse, MS. There wasn't much around to confirm that we had indeed started in Hillhouse. Some of the towns we run through are so small that if you blink your eyes, you've missed it.
After a short turn going east for a change we ran into a lovely reception in Clarksdale, MS. Mayor Henry Espy and his lovely daughter Jaye greeted with a huge smiles and an open hearts. They led us in to the ceremony which took place in a beautiful little church called Friendship AME.
We were fortunate enough to enter in between songs and before Rev. Hardimon's sermon. The members welcomed us to their church and offered their prayers and the Lord's blessings. The Mayor shared some very kind words about the World Harmony Run and turned it over to the team to explain further what we were doing, why we were here and where we were from. It's always so satisfying to see the surprise on the faces of the people we meet when they all the different countries that are represented by the team. It seems to give immediate credibility to the event.
The Mayor had the brilliant idea to have all the members line the aisle towards the exit of the church and to pass the torch from member to member—each making a wish for world harmony. The effect was powerful and to top it off the pianist played and the members sang America the beautiful. It was a very moving.
I think the Mayor was so happy with the outcome at Friendship AME that he was inspired to spontaneously go to another church, one block away.
The Haven United Methodist Church was so kind to interrupt their service and welcome us into their hearts as well. Reverend Mason offered a powerful prayer and led the members in the hymn "Oh how I love Jesus". I felt as though I was deep in the south and surrounded by faith.
We passed to the torch along the aisle once again with each member very soulfully offering their wish for harmony in the world, the nation, the community and in their hearts.
Our deepest gratitude to Mayor Henry Espy, his daughter Jaye and her daughter Colleen for making our stop in Clarksdale an absolute delight. Special thanks to Jaye for so kindly guiding our way out of Clarksdale—we do occasionally get lost out here.
