USA: A belated story
Dear Friends from all over the world,
We are so grateful for all your inspiring and cheering messages and good wishes. We really carry those with us (or maybe they carry us). It is our pleasure to share some of the many experiences, that we get day by day.
Life on the road is not boring, that is for sure. We see a lot of new places and faces every day. We may even get lost, that of course happens to us very rarely (maybe once or twice a day). But it is fun and it also gives us the great opportunity to get in touch with the local people, who are always so kind and happy to help us.
Yesterday (April 27th) we made some friends this way. We were on our way to a pre-organized reception at Elberton Middle School—where later we had a beautiful meeting with a lot of children and the city representatives—but it did not seem quite easy to get there. We were in touch with the rest of the team by CB radios and told them that we got lost. I guess it was not surprising news for them.
One of our great runners (Elke from Austria) jumped out of the car at a health care center to ask for directions. She went in and met the administrator, Brian ... Elke only said: "Hi! We got lost." And that very nice young man, immediately answered:"No you didn't. Just go straight on, and you will get to the school." We could not believe how he knew who we were and where we wanted to go. We gave them flyers and promised to visit them after the ceremony.
So we did as we promised. Spring Valley Health Care Center was a beautiful home for 60 senior people with an extremely kind and open minded staff. They have won many national awards—no wonder, they really deserved it. We had a little spontenous but very happy and sincere reception with some of the dwellers. They came out to the porch and after our adhoc introduction they all held the torch and wished something nice for harmony. Sherrie, a most dedicated social worker, took us around the place, where every room every corner was filled with love and concern. Our German runner, Anja, asked her where she got the energy from to do such difficult work every day tirelessly. Her simple answer was: "They are all part of my heart."
Later they told us how they found out about the run. That day in the morning they heard that the World Harmony Run would go to the Middle School and pass by their Health Center and when they saw us they immediately recognized us and knew that we were not lost.
This unofficial spontaneous meeting is one of our sweetest and most cherished moments along the run. We deeply appreciate and admire what they do and wish them strength to maintain the same joy and dedication.
