Germany 27 May: Brandenburg - Berlin
We started in Brandenburg with two great primary schools: the "Luckenberger Grundschule" and the "Theodor Fontane Grundschule". in both schools we got an enthusiastic welcome!
Lots of cheering, High Five and autographs...
he got lost???
As we reached the primary school in Glindow, the "Glindower Dorfschule", kids surprised us with apples and drinks when we were running in.
In Potsdam we visited first the "Zeppelin Grundschule", a sport orientated primary school which presented itself with a great athletic demonstration.
The kids showed short gigs of their athletic skills. Some human pyramids highlighted the meeting, while fruits were served!
Afterwards we went to the "Gerhart Hauptmann Grundschule". We were slightly delayed, but the hearty reception we got paid off for all the waiting. The kids carried the torch in and performed a nice relay on the schoolyard.
Potsdam is also famous for the castle of Sanssouci: German history reflects here from all the old buildings. A short photo shooting and on we went...
Today we ran into the city of Berlin. We began on the outskirts of the city and ran along an arterial road, accompanied by an accomplished ultra marathon runner. Our path was lined with with parks and then local shops and cafes, where the locals cheered us on.
We ran through a tranquil city park on dirt roads, and then emerged on the Brandenburger Gate, one of the landmarks of Berlin. This gate has been a lasting symbol of peace since its creation 200 years ago.
As we proceeded to the Reichstag we were greeted by three eminent Officials: Mrs. Monica Griefahn, Member of German Parliament and former Environment Minister of the Land of Niedersachsen, Dr. Axel Berg, Member of German Parliament and Vice Spokesperson in terms of energy policy of the SPD parliamentary group and Dr. Karl A. Lamers, Member of German Parliament and Leader of the German Delegation in the Parliamentary Assembly of the NATO.
Backed by a string quartet playing a haunting version of the official Harmony Run song, the officials warmly welcomed us and spoke kind words of support.
They enthusiastically encouraged us to continue in our efforts to lift up the world in our own small but significant way and were genuinely inspired by what we were trying to do.
Finally we revisited Brandenburger Gate which houses the room of silence. This is a room consecrated to silence. The curator, Mrs. Diefenbach welcomed us and seemed to feel in us kindred peace seeking souls. The team spent 10 minutes in the "room of silence", and the atmosphere of the room was unique. It had almost a solid and tangible sense of silence that was remarkable.
It was a busy day thats for sure, but it was filled with many memorable experiences that we will cherish. It was quite an introduction to the heart of Berlin!
