Canada 6 October: Nelson - Rossland

TEAM A

We started from Nelson, a beautiful city in the mountains.

We stayed overnight in the beautiful Prestige Resort, a very nice hotel at the shore of the river.

Our first school was a high school, L.V. Rogers, in Nelson.

It was an honour for us to meet Mayor John Dooley who took a few minutes out of his busy schedule to come to LV Rogers HS.  He spoke beautifully about the City of Nelson's dedication to the cause of peace and offered kind words of encouragement to the World Harmony Run.

John Dooley, the mayor of Nelson, addresses the students and accepts our certificate of appreciation.

We are also grateful to Graham Marshall, teacher at LV Rogers HS, and all the students who so enthusiastically rallied together to welcome the Torch to Nelson.  What a fantastic high school.

Out of the courtyard for a short run around L.V. Rogers School.

Prapti’s family was escorting us, when we were running out from Nelson.

Prapti, Brodi and Naami.

Naami and Collette with the torch

Our two heros. They ran such a long strech with us. We were so proud and they were proud too.

After a most beautiful run through the countryside…

Kalub and his friend

We were surrounded by beautiful mountains, nice clear lakes and colorful forest.

Later on we were received by the Brent Kennedy Elementary School in South Slocan.

Our picture with the Principal, Mrs. Laura Moll

…and then passing of the torch

On our way we met Paul, who was very enthusiastic about the World Harmony Run.

He made a lot of pictures with his cell phone.

After this we still had quite some kilometers to do.

Gautami was challenging the mileage cheerfully, like always.

And at the end of the day we arrived in Rossland a beautiful city in the mountain.

And again we stayed in one of the Prestige Resorts, most luxurious, see tomorrows story for picture of the beautiful hotel and kind staff.

TEAM B

After departing from Nelson,

we ran along the Kootenay and Columbia River valleys on our way to Fruitvale.

The runners became increasingly aware of the rocky and mountainous nature of the route and a few of the lucky ones were able to demonstrate their prowess on 5K uphill climbs. Some even did so smilingly but with every long uphill comes a downhill and the end of the run into town gave everyone even a bigger reason to smile.

As the team approached the Fruitvale Elementary they were greeted by Principal Brian Stefani. He said that the kids were all pumped and ready to greet the Run

and had the entire 400 plus students and staff out lining the top of the crest overlooking the playing field.

Principal Stefani then ran in with the Torch

and handed it over to the kids who passed it all the way down the line, each one making their own personal wish for World Harmony.

The Harmony Runners then went to the bottom of the field and bellowed along with the kids the motto of the Harmony Run: Harmony Begins With Me! It was a wonderfully rousing chant that echoed through the Fruitvale fields.

Principal Stefani was then presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by the Run on behalf of Fruitvale Elementary.

The runners then departed the school to the spontaneous chant of Har-Mo-Ny!, initiated by the students.

After a short break to enjoy some of B.C.s plentiful vegetarian cuisine,

the team met with Mayor Libby Nelson who held the Torch while receiving the Certificate of the Run from Greg Hilton. Our Minnesotan runner Yuyudhan Hoppe was trying to persuade Mayor Nelson to pass a law to trade one of the beautiful mountains in the area for a few of the thousand lakes from his home state. If you can carry it, its yours, she replied.

Yuyudhan then more prudently asked Mayor Nelson to lead the Team on a walk with the Torch through Fruitvale.

While en route the Team met a few of the kids from the Elementary school again along with the Mason family who were out shopping.

Everyone had a chance to the hold the Torch and pass it from one hand to the next.

The team then left Fruitvale to proceed once again along the stunningly beautiful terrain of Eastern B.C.
