Australia 15 March: Perth
Multi-cultural Harmony Marathon around Tomato Lake
Western Australia is the only state with a dedicated week to 'Harmony' and the City of Belmont celebrated the day in style with a Cultural Relay and Community Fair.
The World Harmony Run was invited along. Different cultural, community and ethnic groups carried the torch around picturesque Tomato Lake for the marathon distance. The loop was a perfect kilometre so it made lap counting easy. A beautiful mural depicting the torch and oneness was painted on the path and looked fantastic.
The day started off with a traditional Nyongar welcome, the Harmony Runners passed the torch to Mayor Glenys Godfrey who walked the first lap with African Drummers providing the tempo beat and the relay got under way.
Members from the Muslim, Sikh and Indigenous communities and City of Belmont workers helped the torch complete its marathon in a sub-three-hour time of 2 hours 51 minutes.
Afterwards the runners sampled the multi-culturral cuisine for sale that represented the cultural diversity within the state. It was a great event and at least 600 people came along and supported Harmony Week and the World Harmony Run.
