The Hiroshima Ceremony

The 2010 World Harmony Run in Asia began in April at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park: an abode of deep, respectful silence, created to honour the victims of World War II and remind us of the importance of peace between all nations and peoples. It was broadcast nationwide on NHK News. This was the first time a continuous route has been run through Asia, spanning over 20,000 km, and ending in Moscow five months later.

President Corazon Aquino accepts the Torch on behalf of the citizens of the Philippines at the Presidential Palace in 1993.  Some 20,000 runners carried and followed the Torch during the eleven-day Run on Cebu and Oriental Negros, two of the
Philippine Islands.

The World Harmony Run visits schools and youth  organisations, offering a program that inspires the children of the world in playful ways to create harmony in their own lives. During the program, the running team performs skits, games and music. Children learn the motto “Peace Begins with Me” and make wishes for harmony. In preparation
for the program, children create artwork, poetry and music to express their own dreams for a better world. The presentation usually culminates in a rendition of the World Harmony Run song, composed by Sri Chinmoy, and a run with the Torch.

“We started our Run at nearly 12 noon in tropical Singapore. People think I was crazy to do so because the month of July happened to be one of the hottest months in the year. Jenap, our Chinese Muslim friend who always wears her traditional Islamic costume during her exercise, was rather concerned about this coming Run. She was
afraid that it would be too hot and humid for her to run in her costume in the afternoon
hot sun. But I asked her, ‘Who says it is going to be hot on that day?’ We had fine weather without the sun during most of the event.”  — Urdhacheta Yap, Singapore

Yasuko (Leader of ZA Ryu-Ma, former leader of Ondekoza) as the performer at the final ceremony in Nagasaki. She is one of the most famous taiko drummers in Japan,  described by her fans as the ‘legendary drummer’.

China’s first World Harmony Run ceremony was held in 2005.

The team crossed the border between Russia and China. The runners were welcomed by the mayor of Manchuria City, and other Chinese officials, on the State Gate square. Chinese athletes and the main team, surviving the strong winds, reached the Red Army Park, where the official ceremony was held of placing flowers at the monument of Soviet soldiers. Runners exchanged gifts. The local orchestra played “Moscow Nights”. At night there was an official banquet in honour of the Russian delegation.
