USA 17 June: Olene, OR to Applegate, OR
Video of the first month in USA
Veterans’ Park in Klamath Falls was our first informal stop of the day even before our daily run was underway. We planned to spend at least an hour there to see a very interesting display of what is called ‘Kinetic Sculpture Vehicles’.
These fantastic and strange human propelled vehicles of all sizes and shapes were designed and built by incredible people with amazing imaginations and ingenuity. It was a uniquely amusing experience to see these ‘sculptures’ moving on land and then becoming water-borne, as some of them have to be to enter the race that starts later in the day.
There was also an informal ‘fun run’ organized by Jeff and Amy Wood who invited us last year to introduce our Harmony Runners. We did not give any formal introductions this time but we were able to carry the Torch around to many of the people who were there to witness the events today. It was a relaxing, amusing and illuminating way to spend part of the morning at Veteran’s Park today.
The rest of the day was spectacular, especially for the earlier teams who ran through pine forests up and down mountain passes on our way to Ashland. The fragrance of the pine forest and the beauty of the incredible vistas fed us with energy and made the miles go by so quickly and enjoyably.
Another highlight for my team was a call that we made to some of our friends at the 3100 Mile Race in New York.
It is the longest official race in the world and we are very inspired to hear news about the daily progress of our friends there. But today we were able to talk to five of them and it gave us much inspiration and joy.
Some of them are covering almost as many miles in one day individually as we cover as a team out here. This is incredibly inspiring to us as well difficult to fathom for most people.
We finished our day running into and through some very busy towns that are quite a contrast to the peaceful environment of the pine forests earlier today.
Our accommodations were at the Glenyan Campground in Ashland in very peaceful surroundings as well.
We are grateful to Ped for the cozy campsite at a good rate and look forward to a restful night in this natural surrounding.
Today we had to say goodbye to one of our runners who has been with us since the end of May in Arizona.
Sergey, from Russia, has been a valuable member of our team and will be sorely missed by all. We had a small party for him tonight and wished him ‘shesliva pooti’, which means ‘have a nice trip’, in Russian.
