USA 17 May: Iola, KS to Nowata, OK
There are ‘endless pools’ designed so that you can swim without moving, stroking against a strong flow of water; all the sensation of swimming with none of the momentum. This concept was pretty close to what it was like running in Kansas and Oklahoma today, as we constantly battled relentless headwinds.
In every two mile leg of my total ten mile run today, the usually vibrant torch flame was reduced to a thin plume of white smoke before being completely extinguished. I had never experienced wind like this before. No reprieve or fluctuation against one continuous gale. I knew that this is tornado country, but today it seemed more like a hurricane.
Another day on the road and another unique experience. The difficulty of the wind alongside the beauty of central U.S.A. landscape, so green and clean here now, and yet in a week we will be in the desert. Every day offers unexpected ways the World Harmony Run provides unforgettable experiences. Memories to last a lifetime…..
We are now in Coffeyville, Kansas staying in a wonderful Motel called the Appletree Inn.
We are so grateful to the owners and manager and staff for being so kind to offer complimentary rooms. The pool and Jacuzzi are very clean and offer a great opportunity for a quicker recovery from today’s challenging running.

I run eight miles a day in the U.S. Harmony Run. For me, that is a lot, and my body sometimes complains with unexpected aches and pains. Still, I just keep going.
I was an English major. For the past five years I have worked as a waiter. And now I am running with a torch across the length and breadth of America. How symbolic!
While my body often hurts, I feel great because I have already lost a lot of weight and my leg muscles are much stronger.
I don’t know about others, but when I’m tired and my body is crying for a big bed and a soft pillow, the smallest traces of human kindness mean the whole world to me. A few days ago a middle-aged woman saw me from her car and she honked the horn, gave me a big thumbs-up and shouted “awesome!”
Her enthusiasm made all my sweat and pain worthwhile.
Today as I was completing my last lap, I saw two patrol cars pulling up behind the Harmony Run van. The patrolmen got out of their vehicles and asked the driver if everything was o.k. The driver nodded and then told the policemen about the Run, its intentions and goals, giving them some brochures.
The officers listened with great interest and reacted with delight when we asked them to hold the torch and to stand with us for some photographs. One of the men went to his car and came back with some nice gifts for us- pins embossed with the town logo and nice fountain pens.
In this moment of exchanging gifts and goodwill, we shared the feeling of loving oneness which this Run was designed to instill and promote. I hope that many more people will benefit from the unique and life-affirming message of the Harmony Run.
With sincere thanks,
Morris Klein
