USA 13 August: Millville, RI to New Haven, CT
The morning was a bit overcast and still relatively cool as Jowan and I headed out for our run into Connecticut to the town of Norwich. Our good friend Durdam, came up from Groton to join us for the morning. He helped us with our miles along with Frank Morosky, a long time resident of Norwich who recently moved to Providence. With a police escort into town, we were able to find a wonderful group of local administrators cheering us on as they waited for us to arrive in the heat which had already gone over 90F or (32 C).
President Pro-Tem who we hope will soon be the next Mayor of Norwich, Benjamin P. Lathrop, offered very deep and sincere words of support to our team. Alderwoman Jackie Caroix offered us a proclamation declaring it World Harmony Run Day in Norwich. Her husband Rich and assistant City Manager Bob Zarnetske also attend the event and offered their support and good wishes to us.
They also offered us a beautiful yellow rose bush to inspire us and remind us that Norwich is called the ‘Rose of New England.’ Again we are so grateful to those officials who come out on a very hot and muggy day to spend time with us and offer so much support. We are grateful also to Bill Champagne who organized this event for us and to Frank Morosky who helped and ran as well.
Two of us were fortunate enough to visit our friends, the Rocherolles, at their summer cottage in Groton. Their home on the waterfront of Long Point on the Atlantic Ocean was a nice respite from a hot and busy morning. They even fed us and gave us more food to cook for our evening meal.
Just before ending our day in downtown New Haven by Yale University, we were stopped by a friendly stranger, Ed Taddei, who very generously offered to buy and deliver for us four pizzas from Frank Pepe’s. This pizza I can dare say is among the best ever. I have always told my friends from New York about his unbelievable pizza in New Haven and now I was able to share it with my teammate without having to go out of our way.
We were at my sister Lori’s house with her husband Austin and daughter Jessica and friend Nicolle when Ed delivered the four large pizzas to us. He really displayed an incredible selflessness and oneness as he had to travel quite a ways to deliver them to us.
After swimming in the pool and having our fantastic pizzas, we spent some time with either badminton, ping pong, frizbee or basketball with my family.
After leaving my sister’s place, we stopped by a local homemade ice cream store called Wentworth’s. They kindly offered us some of their delicious ice cream on a day where it was truly appreciated. The ice cream was of the highest quality and tasted fantastic as well.
My mother then invited us to her house afterwards for a meal which never really happened because of the large quantity of pizzas earlier. But we accomplished much here at my Mom’s home in Hamden where I grew up. We washed the cars, created tomorrow’s schedule and wrote the reports you are reading for the last two days.
It is now 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, our last official day of running on the U.S.A. World Harmony Run. It is a mixture of relief and some sadness having been on the road for four months as we carried the Torch to inspire and be inspired by thousands of people allover expressing their hopes and wishes for harmony in the world. Needless to say, we are ever indebted to all those who supported us in any way, including our friends and my relatives today. We are looking forward to an exciting last day, in a few hours, as friends are coming up from New York to join us.
