Ukraine 3 June (Team 2): Melitopol - Berdiansk

The schedule showed a distance of only 118 km for today, but also that the final ceremony was at 4.30 p.m. in the afternoon. So the team started off again at 8 o'clock along our beloved M 14 towards Berdiansk. The weather today seemed nicer than yesterday.

Slightly hotter, more sunny and even the sky seemed more blue. A constantly blowing cool breeze would make sure that the runners didn't get too hot, while around noon we saw a thermometer showing over 30 º C.

Jewgenij Odnodvortsev was waiting for us at the city border of Prymorsk, where our first ceremony took place. Mr. Odnodvortsev is 81 years old, former USSR Decathlon champion and three times Ukrainian Champion. Although his times as a professional sportsman are over since the mid 80s, he still runs at least 10 km twice a week.

It was very inspiring too see him running together with Anna of our Ukrainian team, who at the age of 75 is also still very active and runs usually 10 km every day.

Anna and Jewgenij would lead our runners to the main square. Children of all ages gave flowers to all the runners before the Mayor welcomed us.

Subsequent to our presentation and singing the World Harmony Run song, all the kids ran with us for a short distance.

About 30 km later, at the city sign of Berdiansk, the police was already waiting for us. With them a group of local runners.

So off we went for the last 10 km through the city. Along the way, we were joined by the Ukrainian Girls Major League Basketball Team, Chaika, who accompanied us all the way to the Primoschkaya Square.

A big stage was set up at the square for the festival. After being announced to the audience, the Team carried the Torch on the stage and Martin introduced the Run.

Many among the people present held the torch and had fun taking pictures of each other. The program went on with different singing and dancing performances until we were shown to our accommodation for tonight.

The city of Berdiansk lies on the shore of the Black Sea. In the very south of the city is a very narrow extension of land which is at most a few hundred meters wide and is surrounded by sea. The name is Berdianska- Kosa.

It took us about 10 minutes to reach the holiday resort Agarskij Mys. This is a very nice place and the best thing is: The beach is only 50 meters away. First thing after dinner: taking a swim.

Distance: 118km
