Uganda 16 November: Kampala

Bright and early this morning at the Sir Apollo Kaggwa Primary School just down the road from our wonderful hostel, Backpackers, we were greeted by a few hundred children and a very friendly school staff. Mr. Matovv Steve and others helped to gather the students in the large courtyard and to organize the ranks of classes.

After a brief presentation each class ran enthusiastically around the courtyard with the torch before it was time to give the torch to another class. They didn’t want to stop! After running many miles with the USA team I know it is true that running with the torch gives you lots of energy.

From the youngest to the oldest they took turns carrying the flame and banner, our symbols of the human yearning for Harmony. Our thanks to Mr. Watuke George, Director of studies, as well as Mrs. Nomuwonge Prossie, Mrs. Babirye Rosette, and Mr. Lubera Geoffrey for making us feel so welcome.

In the warm afternoon under a very powerful equatorial Kampala sun, we were welcomed as well to Aga Khan High School by Mrs. Rachel Meakin. Her kind reception made us feel quite welcome.

There were about 400 students on hand this afternoon, and all of them were amped up. It was exams time, so students were glad to not be in class. They had a lot of energy, which can make presenting information difficult, but we are always happy when kids would rather run around than sit. That’s what we do too.

The group quickly moved out to the large field where small groups ran with the torch to hand it off to other groups. While standing out in the field the students were much more ready to hear about the World Harmony Run. While some students ran, other individuals came to us to get a better idea of what we were doing. They all asked very good questions, which revealed a keen interest in the world and an ability to inquire pointedly. They had an appreciation for the global scale as well as the simplicity of the Run.
