Russia 16 July: Orel - Tula

Rise and shine! A nice fluffy omelette waits for us at the breakfast table. Stomachs filled, we head out of Orel. The weather is nice and sunny the whole day. We run through quaint little villages and fields.

The team splits up right from the start in order to cover the great distance faster. One team starts from Orel, and the other 110k from Tula. The latter team’s runners are in very good shape today and cover the distance very fast. So fast, indeed, that they’re able to have a 2-hour break at a river. Here they go for some swimming, work on tans, rest, eat gooseberries, and scoop up melted chocolate pralines sent to us from a friend in Serbia.

At the border of Tula we have a nice little ceremony. We receive a special delicacy called a pryanik, which is a traditional sweet of the region. It is a dark rich cake filled with jam or chocolate. We have a group of young cyclists waiting for us here. Together we run 13k through the city. The city provides us with a hotel for the night. With great care and concern some local friends of ours have prepared a wonderful dinner for us. For dessert they treat us with cake and a variety of tasty pryaniks. As we leave, they give each of us a big breakfast bag and a pryanik each.

Distance: 191km
